Homelessness Programs: Shelter Services

Family Tree’s House of Hope is a family shelter serving households that are currently homeless or at risk of homelessness. The program provides a safe and supportive residential environment, case management, and basic needs using a multigenerational, trauma-informed, and client-centered approach. House of Hope operates 24/7.

Job Summary

The House of Hope Program Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of House of Hope. The Director provides direct leadership and supervision to residential staff, ensures effective staffing and service delivery, supports a safe and welcoming shelter environment, and responds to immediate client and staff needs. The Director works closely with the Vice President of Homelessness Programs and Residential Data and Grants Manager to ensure that House of Hope operates consistently with Family Tree policies, program expectations, contractual requirements, and the organization’s mission and values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Operations

Manage daily House of Hope operations and ensure consistent program functioning.
Ensure residential services are delivered in accordance with program expectations, policies, procedures, and safety standards.
Monitor the physical shelter environment and respond to operational or safety concerns.
Ensure program routines, expectations, and workflows are clearly communicated and consistently implemented.
Identify operational barriers and work with the Vice President of Homelessness Programs to develop solutions.
Support integration and coordination with other Family Tree programs and services.

Staffing and Scheduling

Develop and maintain schedules for regular residential staff and relief coverage.
Monitor staffing levels and address coverage needs.
Respond to call-outs and staffing emergencies.
Participate in hiring, onboarding, and training of House of Hope staff.
Ensure staff understand and follow Family Tree policies, procedures, and program expectations.

Staff Supervision and Leadership

Provide direct supervision, coaching, and support to assigned residential staff.
Conduct regular supervision and performance check-ins.
Address staff performance, conduct, and workplace concerns promptly and appropriately.
Foster teamwork, accountability, communication, and collaboration.
Support staff development and continuous improvement.
Provide leadership during challenging or high-acuity situations.

Client Support and Problem Solving

Respond to immediate client concerns and support staff in addressing complex situations.
Ensure clients are treated with dignity, respect, and consistency.
Support staff in maintaining appropriate boundaries and implementing program expectations.
Assist with crisis response and problem solving as needed.
Help maintain a safe, trauma-informed, and welcoming residential environment.

Documentation and Workflow

Ensure staff understand and consistently follow required documentation processes.
Monitor completion of required program documentation and communicate concerns to the appropriate staff or administrator.
Support case reviews, file reviews, and quality assurance activities.
Ensure operational workflows are implemented consistently.
Partner with the Residential Programs Administrator on documentation, data, and compliance needs.

Intern and Volunteer Management

Coordinate the day-to-day integration of interns and volunteers at House of Hope.
Ensure interns and volunteers understand program expectations, policies, boundaries, and safety procedures.
Provide day-to-day guidance and support to interns and volunteers.
Partner with Family Tree’s Gifts and Community Support Team regarding volunteer and internship needs.

On-Call Responsibilities

Participate in the Residential Services on-call rotation.
Respond appropriately to after-hours operational, staffing, safety, and client concerns.
Provide support and decision-making during situations requiring leadership outside of normal business hours.
Communicate significant incidents and follow-up needs to the Vice President of Homelessness Programs.

Leadership and Collaboration

Communicate regularly with the Vice President of Homelessness Programs regarding program operations, staffing, client concerns, and emerging needs.
Collaborate with the Residential Programs Administrator regarding data, documentation, compliance, and reporting requirements.
Maintain effective relationships with staff, clients, community partners, interns, and volunteers.
Support Family Tree’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and client dignity.

Qualifications: Qualifications and Competencies

Experience working with families and individuals experiencing homelessness or other significant barriers.
Experience supervising staff in a human services, residential, shelter, or related environment.
Knowledge of trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches.
Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Experience with HMIS and Salesforce
Ability to make decisions in a fast-paced, 24/7 environment.
Ability to remain calm and effective during crises and challenging situations.
Commitment to client dignity, equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive services.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and participate in an on-call rotation.

Preferred Experience

Experience working in emergency shelter, transitional housing, homelessness services, or residential programs.
Experience with HMIS or other human services databases.
Familiarity with 2Gen approaches, domestic violence-informed services, or related models.
Bilingual English/Spanish skills.
