Histology Specialist - Pathology General Histology

Position Summary

The Histology Specialist maintains competence in every aspect of Histology and acts in place of the supervisor when necessary. Position provides technical expertise and leadership to develop, perform and troubleshoot all histologic staining procedures to include specialized histology processes.

As a Histology Specialist, you will:

• Be responsible for the overall operation and organization of Special Histology (Immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, Immunofluorescence and other specialized procedures) to include validation studies, maintenance of controls, antibodies and other reagents
   
• Maintain an accurate list of approved antibodies and their availability including appropriate notification to staff and physicians and ensuring all are appropriately set up in the computer system for ordering. 
   
• Responsible for the maintenance and routine evaluation of technical quality and stain quality for all of Histology to include routine H&E, special stains, IHCs, -ish, IFs and other specialized stains.  
   
• Maintenance of new processes and quality improvement procedures in the Special Histology area of the lab. Maintain and update procedures as necessary.
   
• Responsible for the preparation, maintenance of slides and required documentation for the CAP Inter-laboratory Comparison program proficiency testing and surveys.  
   
• Responsible for maintenance of all equipment to include documentation and validations as necessary.
   
• Responsible for the organization and billing of research requests and other outside technical requests.
   
• Responsible for providing technical assistance to Electron Microscopy including renal triage as needed.
   
• Act in place of the Histology Supervisor or Section Manager as needed.  Assist in the selection, development and training of histology employees and with employee evaluations. Monitor and ensure safe working environment and refers suggestions and observations to the Histology Supervisor and/or Section Manager.
   
• Supplement the technical staff at the bench when appropriate.  Assist with gross dissection, embedding, cutting, preparation of special stains, immunohistochemistry, -ish and immunofluorescence as necessary.
   
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• High School graduate or equivalent or higher degree with at least 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of academic credit of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both disciplines)
   
• Must be HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) eligible. HT (ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) must be obtained within 2 years of hire/transfer.
   
• Experience: 8 years of laboratory experience required. 5 of the 8 years must be Immunohistochemistry experience. QIHC certification will substitute for one year of the required experience.

Preferred:

• QIHC (Qualification in Immunohistochemistry) ASCP certification.

Pay Range

• $27.22 - $39.68 (hourly)
