The main campus is nestled in the heart of a historic residential neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia that is vibrant and just minutes from the excitement of Center City. Position Summary 

The Head Coach is responsible for coaching, directing and executing all aspects of an NCAA Division II program, and operating the program with integrity and in a welcoming manner that complies with NCAA, Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Athletics Department and University rules and regulations. The Head Coach will cooperate and work harmoniously within the athletics department, and the campus community, as appropriate, in carrying out the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletic program. Additionally, will assist as site supervisor for various sporting events, and participate in Student Affairs programming, as scheduled.

Coaching Staff

Essential Functions: Job duties that must be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, and may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This job description is illustrative and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents in this position.

  • Responsible for administering all aspects of the sport program including but not limited to: quality coaching and instruction; compliance; recruiting; promoting/fundraising; team travel arrangements; maintaining equipment; community service initiatives; supervising assistants; monitoring academic progress of student-athletes; and fulfilling other such duties as they arise or as assigned. 
  • Required to be thoroughly familiar with and comply with all University, Department, NCAA, and CACC policies, rules and regulations, and disseminate such information to assistant coaches and student-athletes, as appropriate. 
  • Collaborate with and provide all necessary information to the Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance and ensure all NCAA and CACC rules and regulations are adhered to. This includes annual and on time completion of the NCAA Recruiting certification test.
  • Model good sportsmanship behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards student-athletes, fans, parents, officials, spectators and community.
  • Serve as ambassador at University events and Open Houses.
  • Foster a healthy environment for student-athletes while promoting sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
  • Responsible for assisting in the preparation of, and adhering to, deadlines and specific dates for the timely completion of all forms and related materials.
  • Effectively manage and strictly adhere to travel, recruiting, scholarship and departmental budgets. Obtain approval from the Athletic Director, in advance of any variance.
  • Collaborate with Strength & Conditioning Coach/Athletic Training Staff to ensure the physical health, safety and well-being of student-athletes.
  • Provide on-site supervision during all team activities. 
  • Moderate the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) including scheduling meetings, planning special events, performing community service and attending Conference SAAC meetings.
  • Assist with site supervision and preparation of athletic programs, special events and home contests, for other sports, as scheduled. 
  • Assist, plan, moderate and supervise outside vendors and events in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Athletics for Daily Operations.
  • Coordinate, track and distribute apparel/equipment orders for the Department of Athletics
  • Responsible for developing and executing fundraising initiatives and events.

Additionally, demonstrate the ability to work with diverse personalities, and harmoniously with students, faculty and staff, and the public. Employees are expected to follow and abide by all University policies, rules, regulations and guidelines. Complete all necessary Compliance and Institutional documentation as required.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • At least two years’ collegiate level coaching and recruiting experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Knowledge of and ability to follow university policies and procedures. 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the campus community.

  • Proficient with computer software (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)
  • NCAA sport rules and regulations
  • Game day management and best practices

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Excellent attention to detail, problem solving, analytical, communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Understanding of organizational processes and strong follow-up skills.
  • Must demonstrate good time management and project management skills.

Work Environment: 

Operates in an office environment, that may have frequent interruptions. The area is well-lit, temperature controlled and free from hazards. Noise level is generally quiet to moderate. Work is primarily performed on the court/field or track, classroom or office setting. Office area is well-lit, temperature controlled and free from hazards. Travel, and work at various hours of the day or night, including early morning, overnight and weekend work is required. 

Physical Requirements:

Communicates frequently, in person, over the phone, or via a computer. Hearing is needed for extensive telephone and in person communication. Regularly required to sit for long periods of time; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms. Manual dexterity is needed in order to operate a computer keyboard. Operates standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Certification/Licensure: 

CPR, 1st Aid & AED required

Other important information: 

  • Should teleworking become necessary, employee must be willing and able to perform all parts of this job description while working from home, on campus or a combination, and be proficient or willing to become proficient in the technology needed to work remotely. 
  • Night and weekend availability is required
  • Ability to drive a 15-passenger van is required
  • Travel to events and evaluate potential student-athlete talent, correspond with all prospects via email, phone, face to face conversations, etc.
