INTRODUCTORY PERIOD: Six (6) Months

POSTING DATE: September 17, 2026

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Open Until Filled, Apply Immediately.

Definition of Classification:

The Student Success Center (SSC) Graduate Assistants support the University's efforts to promote student access, academic success, persistence, and belonging. Graduate Assistants work collaboratively with professional staff across the Student Success Center and may support programs and services in Disability & Accessibility Services (DAS), Tutoring & Academic Support, and other SSC initiatives.

While each Graduate Assistant may have a primary area of assignment (for example, Tutoring Services or Disability and Accessibility Services) based on departmental needs, experience, and interests, all Graduate Assistants are members of the broader SSC team and may provide support across functional areas. Graduate Assistants report to the Associate Dean but work closely with and support the Director of Disability and Accessibility Services and the Assistant Director of Tutoring Services and the Writing Center.  This structure provides Graduate Assistants with experience in student support and higher education administration while allowing the SSC to respond flexibly to changing student and program needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Student Success Center Support

  • Assist with the development and implementation of programs designed to promote student success, persistence, self-advocacy, help-seeking, and effective academic habits.
  • Provide support for SSC workshops, events, outreach campaigns, and student-engagement initiatives.
  • Assist students with navigating SSC resources and connecting with appropriate University services.
  • Develop student-facing resources, presentations, communications, and educational materials.
  • Provide support for special projects and emerging Student Success Center initiatives.
  • Collaborate with professional staff, undergraduate student employees, peer leaders, tutors, and other members of the SSC team.
  • Provide front-desk or general SSC coverage as needed.

 Tutoring & Academic Support

Depending upon assignment, responsibilities may include:

  • Assist professional staff with the coordination and administration of subject tutoring, writing support, peer academic support, and related programs.
  • Help coordinate group tutoring, study halls, academic workshops, embedded academic support, and other targeted academic-support initiatives.
  • Support tutor recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, communication, and ongoing professional development.
  • Assist with the development of tutor training materials, workshops, academic-success resources, and other programming.
  • Assist with outreach designed to increase student awareness and utilization of tutoring and academic-support resources.
  • Support programming during high-demand academic periods, including midterms and final examinations.
  • Provide support and guidance to undergraduate peer academic-support staff within the parameters established by professional SSC staff.

 Disability & Accessibility Services

Depending upon assignment, responsibilities may include:

  • Assist DAS professional staff with the coordination and implementation of approved academic accommodations and accessibility services.
  • Support administrative processes and logistics associated with accommodations and other DAS services.
  • Assist with student communication, outreach, appointment preparation, follow-up, and resource development as directed by professional DAS staff.
  • Support accessibility-related educational programming, workshops, awareness initiatives, and campus events.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of student and faculty resources related to accessibility and accommodation processes.
  • Support data entry, records management, utilization tracking, and program assessment consistent with University policies and confidentiality requirements.
  • Support special projects designed to improve accessibility, student self-advocacy, and disability inclusion across the University.
  • If assigned, review accommodations paperwork and documentation and participate in student meetings with professional staff supervision.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend regular meetings, training, and supervision with assigned SSC professional staff.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and safeguard confidential student information in accordance with FERPA, University policy, and applicable requirements.
  • Exercise discretion and sound judgment when working with sensitive student information and refer matters requiring professional decision-making to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete assigned administrative responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners and represent the Student Success Center professionally.
  • Support divisional and/or institutional initiatives or programs.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the purpose and scope of the Graduate Assistant position.

Schedule Expectations

Graduate Assistants will generally work 15–20 hours per week, not to exceed 20 hours per week, with schedules established in consultation with their supervisor and based on academic schedules and departmental needs.  Because some student-success and academic-support activities occur outside traditional business hours, Graduate Assistants should expect some regularly scheduled or periodic evening and after-hours work. Evening responsibilities may include support for tutoring and academic-support programming, study halls, student events, testing support, and other SSC initiatives. Some daytime availability during regular University business hours will also be required.

Qualifications Guidelines:

Any combination of experience/training/education equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

  • Current enrollment and good standing in an eligible University graduate program.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
  •
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality when working with student information.
  • Interest in student success, academic support, accessibility, higher education, education, counseling, student affairs, or a related area.
  • Availability to work a combination of daytime and evening hours based on assigned responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in student services, student affairs, higher education, or another student-support setting.
  • Experience developing or facilitating workshops, trainings, educational programs, or student activities.
  • Familiarity with academic-success strategies, executive functioning, learning strategies, or peer academic support.
  • Experience working with disabled and/or neurodivergent students or knowledge of accessibility and inclusive educational practices.
  • Experience working with confidential or sensitive information.

Learning Outcomes and Professional Development

The Graduate Assistant position is designed to provide meaningful professional experience in student success and higher education administration. Graduate Assistants will have opportunities to develop skills in program development, student support, accessibility, academic-support services, assessment, communication, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration.

Because Graduate Assistants work across the Student Success Center, they will also gain exposure to how multiple student-support functions work together to address barriers, promote student development, and improve student persistence and academic success.

Graduate Assistants with a primary focus in this area have the opportunity to learn about accommodation procedures in higher education and to put their coursework to practice in reviewing and understanding documentation, meeting with students, etc.  Graduate Assistants may assist with accommodation-related processes but do not independently determine student eligibility for disability accommodations, approve or deny accommodations, or make other decisions reserved for authorized DAS professional staff.

Graduate Assistants have the opportunity to expand on their academic learning as related to learning theories, academic support methodologies, and working with diverse learners in higher education.  Graduate Assistants with a primary focus on Tutoring and the Writing Center may assist with mentoring and professional development of the student tutors under the supervision of the Assistant Director, but do not act as supervisors of student workers or independently assume responsibility for training.

Knowledge and Skills:

Graduate Assistants are anticipated to achieve the following learning outcomes from this role:

  • Apply graduate-level coursework to professional practice in student success, higher education administration, accessibility, learning theory, and academic support.
  • Develop knowledge of disability and accessibility services in higher education, including accommodation processes, documentation review, the interactive process, and appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Apply learning theories and academic-support methodologies when working with diverse learners and supporting tutoring, writing, and other academic-success programs.
  • Develop skills in program development, communication, and peer mentoring through participation in SSC programs and initiatives.
  • Understand cross-functional approaches to student success and how advising, accessibility, tutoring, writing support, and other services work collaboratively to address barriers, promote student development, and improve persistence and academic success.
