Job Description 
RCH Solutions is seeking a Cloud Engineer to design, build, and operate cloud-native services on Google Cloud Platform in support of research and bioinformatics workloads. The right candidate will develop microservices and web applications that put scientific computing directly in the hands of researchers and will build and maintain the workflow orchestration that runs bioinformatics pipelines at scale. You will function as a team member integrating cloud services, scientific applications, and upstream and downstream data systems into a coherent platform. Our ideal candidate is an experienced and talented engineer who is equally comfortable writing production code and reasoning about infrastructure, and who will be instrumental in transforming how computing services are leveraged to support our client's science. 
 
This role will involve driving architecture, roadmaps, and execution of projects that deliver GCP-based platform services to scientific end users. You will develop and implement engineering best practices for customers and RCH applications teams; engaging in the fast-moving realm of Life Sciences, prioritizing innovation. The cloud landscape and the bioinformatics tooling ecosystem are both continuously evolving, with new services and pipeline frameworks released constantly. You know how to distinguish hype from reality and are comfortable making recommendations that best suit our clients’ needs. 
 
Responsibilities:  

• Design, build, and deploy microservices and APIs on Google Cloud Platform to support scientific and bioinformatics workloads

• Develop and maintain web applications that give researchers self-service access to data, pipelines, and compute

• Build, operate, and tune workflow orchestration for bioinformatics pipelines, including scheduling, error handling, and runtime and cost optimization

• Integrate cloud services, scientific applications, and internal and third-party data systems through well-documented, maintainable interfaces

• Ensure that all systems are compliant with company security standards and applicable regulatory requirements

• Troubleshoot operational issues as they arise on supported platforms, and escalate to other IT units as necessary

Essential Qualifications: 

• 3+ years of professional experience in cloud engineering or software engineering, including production workloads on Google Cloud Platform

• Experience designing and deploying microservices, including containerization and REST or gRPC API development

• Experience with a workflow orchestration framework for scientific or data pipelines, such as Nextflow, Cromwell, Snakemake, or Airflow

• Demonstrated systems integration experience connecting cloud services, applications, and external data sources

• Web application development experience, either full stack or strong backend skills paired with working front-end proficiency

• Proficiency in Python and comfort working in a Linux environment

• Excellent communication skills, including preparation of written documentation for IT colleagues and scientific end users

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Bioinformatics, or equivalent work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Hands-on experience supporting bioinformatics or computational biology workloads, such as genomics and NGS pipelines, structural biology, or cheminformatics

• Familiarity with GCP services including GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, BigQuery, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Storage

• Experience with infrastructure as code, such as Terraform

• Proficient in building Docker images

• Experience with CI/CD for building and deploying containerized services

• R, or other programming languages common in scientific computing

• Has good knowledge of deploying or supporting GxP systems

• Git, BitBucket, or other version control tools
