JOB SUMMARY
The Front Desk Security is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and professional environment at the facility’s main entrance. This role includes monitoring all entrances and exits, verifying authorized access, managing visitor and participant sign-ins, and ensuring only approved individuals pick up participants. The officer also supervises youth awaiting pickup, mediates conflicts, responds to emergencies, and patrols the site for potential safety concerns. Additional responsibilities include covering the front desk, answering phones, documenting daily activities in a logbook, and supporting opening and closing procedures.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains strict boundaries with program staff and participants
Provide an atmosphere in which all participants, staff and visitors feel safe
Manage and mediate all conflict
Monitor entrances and exits; prevent unapproved entry; controls entrances; direct persons who cause a disturbance to leave the property; keep lobby clear of unauthorized persons
Patrols site; checks for unsafe conditions
Ensuring that facility is opened and/ or closed during specified hours
Responds to emergencies in an orderly manner
Ensure that all participants and visitors sign in and out daily
Ensure that only approved/authorized individuals sign out participants during daily pick up
Supervise youth participants that are waiting for pick up
Communicates in a manner that is open, honest and responsive in all situations
Answer phone calls; covers front desk
Document daily occurrences, events, and happenings in the logbook
Additional duties as required by supervisor(s)
Physical Demands: The work requires routine walking, standing, bending and carrying items weighing less than fifty pounds.
Qualifications: STATEMENT OF SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES
Valid NYS Security Guard License
Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a security guard
Back ground clearance; fingerprinting, sex offender check list; physical, three (3) reference check
Relevant experience in a youth setting preferred
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
A genuine respect for and an interest in the well-being of children
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in a written and oral form
Experience in a non-profit setting
Excellent interpersonal ,oral and written communication skills
Detail-oriented and strong organizational and follow up skills
Flexibility, patience, resourcefulness and a willingness to learn
Ability to be an effective team leader
Good interpersonal skills, with the ability and willingness to work with diverse ethnic populations
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

HISTORY:
Jacob A. Riis was a native of Ribe, Denmark, and came to New York City in 1870. Riis's book, "How the Other Half Lives" exposed conditions previously thought not to exist in America. He established Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement to meet the needs of newly arrived immigrants.
In 1897, the settlement house moved into its first home at 48 Henry St. in lower east Manhattan. Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement continued to diversify activities, broadening the scope of activities to include athletics, citizenship classes, and drama.
In the 1940s and 50s, the settlement house began to offer programs for residents of public housing developments in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. At the same time, the original settlement house building was sold, and in 1950, Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement moved all of its activities to the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, Queens.
