Volunteer With AIM Independent Living Center

About the Role

At AIM Independent Living Center, volunteers are an important part of building inclusive communities. As an AIM volunteer, you’ll have an opportunity to use your time, talents, experiences, and voice to make a meaningful difference. Whether you’re helping with community outreach, supporting an event, participating in advocacy efforts, assisting with programs, or lending a hand behind the scenes, your contribution helps AIM strengthen connections and create more accessible, flourishing communities.

You’ll work alongside AIM staff, consumers, community partners, and other volunteers who share a commitment to independence, dignity, inclusion, and equal opportunity. Some volunteer opportunities may involve helping raise awareness about disability rights and accessibility, participating in systems advocacy, supporting community events, or helping connect people with information and resources.

We welcome people from all backgrounds and encourage individuals with disabilities, family members, community members, students, retirees, professionals, and anyone who wants to make a difference to get involved. 

This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity. Volunteers contribute their time and talents in support of AIM’s mission and are not employees of AIM.

What We’re Looking For

AIM volunteers bring a wide range of experiences and skills. We’re looking for people who:

• Are at least 18 years old, unless a specific volunteer opportunity allows otherwise.
• Are dependable and willing to make a volunteer commitment that works for both you and AIM.
• Enjoy working with and supporting people from diverse backgrounds.
• Communicate respectfully and effectively with others.
• Believe everyone deserves the opportunity to live independently and participate fully in their community.
• Are willing to learn about disability rights, independent living, accessibility, and AIM’s mission.
• Can maintain appropriate confidentiality and respect the privacy, choices, and independence of the people we serve.
• Are willing to complete a background check or other screening when required for a particular volunteer opportunity.

Most importantly, we’re looking for people who care.

Helpful Experience & Skills

You do not need to be a disability-services expert or have previous nonprofit experience to volunteer with AIM. Training and guidance will be provided based on the opportunity.

Experience or skills that may be helpful include:

• Previous volunteer, community service, advocacy, or nonprofit experience.
• Experience working with or supporting people with disabilities.
• Bilingual or multilingual communication skills.
• Knowledge of local community resources and organizations.
• Event planning, outreach, public speaking, or community organizing.
• Administrative, organizational, writing, or communication skills.
• Comfort using email, computers, social media, or other basic technology.
• Personal or professional experience navigating accessibility, disability services, or community resources.

How Volunteers Make a Difference

Depending on your interests and availability, AIM volunteers may:

• Support community outreach activities, events, and educational programs.
• Participate in disability awareness and accessibility initiatives.
• Assist with systems advocacy efforts, including contacting elected officials, signing petitions, writing letters or emails, making phone calls, and participating in advocacy events.
• Help AIM connect with community members and partner organizations.
• Assist with event preparation, registration, setup, outreach, or other activities.
• Support AIM programs and special projects.
• Help share information about AIM’s services and resources.
• Assist with administrative or organizational tasks.
• Contribute ideas, skills, and lived experiences that strengthen AIM’s work.
• Help create welcoming, accessible, and inclusive experiences for everyone in the community.

Volunteer opportunities may vary based on current AIM programs, community needs, events, and advocacy priorities.
