How you’ll contribute  

A Food Services Aide who excels in this role: 

• Prepare and cook food for patients, employees, visitors, and other hospital food service needs while following established recipes, procedures, and food safety standards.

• Cross-train across multiple functions within the Food & Nutrition Services department to provide coverage based on departmental needs.

• Operate commercial kitchen equipment, including ovens, stovetops, grills, deep fryers, and other food preparation equipment.

• Assist with preparing meals according to prescribed therapeutic diets, including modified food consistencies and other dietary requirements.

• Support meal preparation and service according to established daily timelines to ensure meals are ready and distributed on schedule.

• Assist with nutritional aide functions, food preparation, serving, stocking, and other kitchen responsibilities as needed.

• Maintain organized, clean, safe, and sanitary food preparation, service, and storage areas.

• Assist with dishwashing and general kitchen sanitation duties.

• Properly store food, beverages, supplies, and equipment according to department policies and procedures.

• Provide backup coverage for team members during scheduled absences, vacations, leaves, or unexpected staffing needs.

• Occasionally assist with patient concerns regarding meals and work with the team to identify appropriate alternatives that meet the patient's nutritional needs and prescribed diet.

• Safely lift, move, and handle food, supplies, equipment, and other materials associated with daily kitchen operations.

• Demonstrate strong time management and organization to complete responsibilities within required meal-service timelines.

• Work independently once trained while asking questions or seeking assistance when needed.

• Maintain dependable attendance and report as scheduled to ensure appropriate kitchen coverage and uninterrupted meal service for patients.

What we’re looking for 
Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent, required. Additional requirements include:  

• Dependable attendance and the ability to consistently report for early-morning shifts.

• Ability and willingness to work an as-needed/PRN schedule, with the understanding that hours are not guaranteed.

• Availability to support the department's current every-other-weekend morning cook need.

• Ability to begin work as early as 4:30 a.m. when scheduled in the cook role.

• Ability to manage time effectively and complete assigned responsibilities according to established meal-service timelines.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Ability to work independently after training without requiring continuous supervision.

• Ability to receive feedback and coaching professionally and apply it to future work.

• Willingness to cross-train in multiple Food & Nutrition Services functions.

• Ability to safely operate commercial kitchen equipment after appropriate training.

• Ability to learn and follow requirements associated with therapeutic and modified-consistency diets.

• Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including prolonged standing/walking and lifting/moving food, supplies, and equipment.

• Team-oriented attitude with a commitment to providing dependable service to patients and the hospital.

Preferred

• Previous food service, restaurant, dietary, cooking, or healthcare food service experience.

• Previous experience working with commercial kitchen equipment.

• Familiarity with therapeutic diets or healthcare food service standards.

Schedule: PRN/as needed. Hours are not guaranteed and will vary based on department staffing needs. The current primary need is every-other-weekend morning cook coverage from 4:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m., with approximately 16 hours available every other weekend. Additional weekday shifts may be available based on departmental needs. Candidates should be comfortable with early-morning scheduling and flexible cross-training across Food & Nutrition Services.
