Fire Prevention Student Worker (FWS/NFWS)

Job Description

Grand Canyon University is seeking a Fire Prevention Student Aid to support the mission of Grand Canyon University through GCU's Fire Prevention department.

Purpose within the Organization:

The Fire Prevention department is seeking an energetic, self-motivated student worker to participate in supporting the overall mission of the Fire Prevention department, which is to create a safe and healthy environment on campus. 

This position will be part of the Fire Prevention department and report directly into the Fire Safety Manager. The candidate selected for this position will assist the Fire Prevention department in their responsibilities to maintain, service, repair, test and inspect fire protection equipment, elevators and emergency generators on campus. This position will primarily involve being in the field and assisting the Fire Prevention team with their responsibilities. 

Primary responsibilities/Accountabilities/Essential functions:

• Perform monthly fire extinguisher inspections.
• Assist in performing inspections on fire protection systems and emergency generators. 
• Assist with administrative tasks.
• Organize documents and inspection reports created by the Fire Prevention department.
• Assist in maintaining parts inventory.
• Respond to issues and work orders submitted to the Fire Prevention department. 
• Scan documents, make photocopies, mail correspondence, and handle invoices.
• Keep appropriate staff informed of issues and project status.
• Maintain computer databases to organize and store information.
• Assist with contractor appointments and tasks.
• Assist with the Fire Prevention department with a variety of tasks.

Equipment used and Responsibility:

• Smoke detector testing kit for testing smoke detectors
• Ladders to complete tasks
• Wrenches to complete tasks
• Power tools to complete tasks

Qualifications:

• Must be familiar with, and follow, safety requirements and precautions.
• Must have the physical ability to move about campus and the buildings in order to fulfill daily tasks and activities.
• Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting varying and competing timelines.
• Detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy.
• Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to copy, scan, and fax documents.
• Self-motivated with a desire to learn and serve.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Must be a collaborative team player or capable of working independently.
• Valid Drivers License and Clean Driving Record

Experience/Education:

Grand Canyon University is committed to a student first policy.

Therefore, all applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered for student employment:

• Enrolled at GCU as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s program or Master’s program.
• Retain a 2.0 GPA as a Bachelor level student or a 3.0 GPA as a Master level student.
• Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the University.

Pay Rate: Minimum Wage
