Job Description

Position: Canvasser

Part Time / Full Time - Temporary Assignment
Hiring Begins: 9/14/2026

About Texas Campaign for the Environment (TCE):

TCE’s mission is to empower Texans to fight pollution through sustained grassroots organizing campaigns that shift corporate and governmental environmental policy. TCE, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, acts as a hub for climate justice work in Texas and beyond, directly influencing public policy through community-based lobbying. This organization leads local, statewide and national issue campaigns to fight pollution, especially fossil fuel and petrochemical facilities that harm communities and worsen climate and other pollution impacts.

TCE is part of an international movement to stop a tidal wave of proposed petrochemical and fossil fuel exports facilities along the Gulf Coast. These facilities, if built, would have dire consequences on local air pollution and climate change and would largely benefit major energy company shareholders and executives while forcing ordinary Texans to pay higher prices.

About the role and Fair Water Amendment (Proposition B):

Corpus Christi is in a long-term drought, but City Hall gives the biggest water users a pass on paying and doing their fair share. For nearly a decade, large industrial water users have been allowed to pay a modest "exemption fee" to avoid responsibility for much-larger drought surcharges and to forgo participating in some conservation efforts, even during severe drought stages. That means residents, small businesses, schools, and hospitals must conserve water and may face fines or surcharges during drought conditions, while big industrial users, companies like ExxonMobil, Valero and Citgo, can opt out of their obligations.

We are seeking motivated and community-minded Door-to-Door Canvassers for a temporary assignment to engage registered voters across Corpus Christi about the Fair Water Amendment (Proposition B). Canvassers will go door-to-door in targeted neighborhoods, speak directly with registered voters, provide accurate information about Proposition B, and conduct voter surveys to understand levels of support, opposition, and voter engagement around the amendment. This is a people-focused position for individuals who enjoy connecting with their community and are comfortable having conversations with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

If approved by voters this November, the Proposition B will:

  • End exemption programs that allow large industrial water users to avoid drought surcharges and conservation requirements.
  • Require all large industrial users to pay drought surcharges once exemption programs terminate.
  • Set minimum drought surcharges for industry based on rates adopted by the City Council in 2025.
  • Require large industrial users to follow all applicable drought conservation, allocation, and curtailment rules.
  • Apply the same standards to the City's wholesale water customers, ensuring fairness across the entire system.

The Fair Water Amendment would not raise water rates for residents or small businesses, and does not mandate drought surcharges for anyone other than large industrial users!

Compensation and Position Details

The position starts at $20/hour, with opportunities to earn additional compensation through the campaign's bonus structure:

  • Experienced Canvasser Bonus: +$2/hour for qualifying canvassers with prior professional canvassing experience.
  • Bilingual Bonus: +$1/hour for qualifying canvassers who can effectively canvass in both English and Spanish.
  • Campaign Goal Bonus: $100 for completing the campaign's established door-knocking and voter conversation goals, while maintaining accurate canvassing data and meeting campaign participation requirements.
  • Victory Bonus: $150 if the campaign achieves its targeted electoral victory and the canvasser meets the eligibility requirements.

Expected Time Commitment: 15-30 hours per week

This is a temporary work assignment that will end on election day, November 3, 2026. Because this position is considered temporary, 90 days or less in duration, it is ineligible to be included in the collective bargaining unit of the Texas Environmental Workers Union (TEWU).

Canvasser Responsibilities

  • Travel throughout assigned neighborhoods and engage registered voters at their homes to introduce them to the Fair Water Amendment (Proposition B).
  • Conduct brief voter surveys to understand levels of support, opposition, and engagement around the amendment while providing accurate, campaign-approved information. All voter interactions and responses will be recorded accurately using MiniVAN.
  • Meet daily and weekly door-knocking and voter conversation goals, follow assigned canvassing turf and campaign protocols, and identify voters who may want additional information or opportunities to become involved.
  • Attend required training, team meetings, and campaign briefings, maintaining professionalism and respect in every interaction, and accurately reporting canvassing activity at the end of each shift.

Essential Job Functions

  • Frequently move door-to-door in residential areas to engage voters
  • Occasionally ascend/descend stairs
  • Communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer)
  • Frequently work in outdoor weather conditions
  • Operate a smartphone or tablet for data entry
  • Commute within the metro area of Corpus Christi, Texas

Qualifications

TCE is seeking individuals who are:

  • Friendly
  • Reliable
  • Community-minded
  • Comfortable speaking with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Strong in their interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to approach voters respectfully and have conversations with people who may hold different opinions
  • Able to work independently while remaining accountable to team goals
  • Familiar with use of a smartphone or tablet to enter information
  • Ready and willing to learn the MiniVAN voter contact system
  • Willing to move around residential neighborhoods for extended periods and work outdoors in varying weather conditions

Preferred

  • Previous canvassing, organizing, campaign, or community outreach experience
  • Prior experience with MiniVan voter contact system
  • Bilingual English/Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply
