Environmental Specialist

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Environmental Specialist based in the United States.

This role provides environmental expertise and compliance support across multiple manufacturing sites within an assigned region. You will help ensure operations remain aligned with environmental regulations, permits, internal standards, and evolving compliance requirements. Working closely with EHS, Operations, Engineering, Facilities, Legal, and business leadership, you will identify risks and develop practical, risk-based solutions. The position covers a broad range of environmental programs, including air emissions, hazardous waste, wastewater, stormwater, chemical management, and environmental incidents. You will also help strengthen compliance systems, standardize processes, and identify recurring risks across sites. This is an influential technical role focused on maintaining compliant operations while driving continuous environmental performance improvements.

Accountabilities:

• Provide environmental technical expertise and compliance support to manufacturing sites across the assigned region.
• Evaluate compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations, permits, internal standards, and other environmental requirements.
• Lead or support environmental legal compliance audits, risk assessments, and compliance reviews, including the development and verification of corrective actions.
• Provide technical guidance on air permitting and emissions compliance, including permit applicability, emissions inventories, permit applications and modifications, calculations, monitoring, recordkeeping, and regulatory reporting.
• Periodically verify that environmental permits, registrations, and authorizations accurately reflect site equipment, processes, materials, production volumes, emission sources, discharges, and operating conditions.
• Provide technical oversight for hazardous and non-hazardous waste programs, including waste characterization, generator status, storage, labeling, transportation, disposal, manifests, vendors, and regulatory documentation.
• Support wastewater and stormwater compliance programs, including permitting, sampling, monitoring, analytical-data review, discharge limitations, treatment-system performance, inspections, reporting, and unauthorized discharge investigations.
• Support programs related to spill prevention and response, chemical management, storage tanks, environmental releases, and environmental emergency response.
• Investigate and manage environmental incidents, releases, permit deviations, exceedances, Notices of Violation, and other significant environmental events, including root-cause analysis and corrective and preventive actions.
• Review and validate environmental compliance data used for permit tracking, emissions calculations, regulatory reporting, waste reporting, wastewater reporting, and other environmental submissions.
• Monitor corrective actions and help sites prioritize closure according to regulatory and environmental risk, escalating overdue or high-risk items when appropriate.
• Analyze audit findings, incidents, regulatory events, and compliance trends to identify recurring or systemic risks and develop scalable solutions, tools, standards, and best practices.
• Develop and maintain standardized compliance tools, procedures, permit matrices, compliance calendars, checklists, and technical guidance to improve regional consistency.
• Coordinate and provide technical oversight for environmental consultants, laboratories, waste vendors, and other environmental service providers.
• Monitor emerging environmental regulations and evaluate their potential impact on regional manufacturing operations.
• Promote the sharing of environmental compliance best practices, regulatory lessons learned, and significant environmental events across sites to prevent recurrence and support continuous improvement.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related technical discipline, with at least 8 years of progressive environmental compliance experience, preferably within manufacturing or industrial operations.
• A master’s degree or higher, or local equivalent, may be preferred for this level.
• Demonstrated technical expertise across multiple environmental regulatory programs, including air permitting and emissions, hazardous waste, wastewater and stormwater, chemical management, spill prevention, and environmental reporting.
• Strong ability to interpret environmental regulations and permit conditions, determine regulatory applicability, identify compliance gaps, and develop practical risk-based solutions.
• Working knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and environmental compliance management or data systems is preferred.
• Professional certifications such as CHMM, PE, QEP, REM, or equivalent are preferred but not required.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, project-management, and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and provide technical guidance across multiple organizational levels and functions.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with EHS, Operations, Engineering, Facilities, Legal, leadership, and external environmental service providers.
• Willingness and ability to travel to manufacturing sites within the assigned region as required.
