Project Description

Public schools in Georgia are looking for recent graduates and experienced educators alike to support the country’s English language programs and youth engagement.
Georgia is currently experiencing a declining youth population due to decreasing birth rate, migration of young people, and a cultural shift to delayed parenthood. This makes investing in youth all the more important. However, many public schools, especially those in rural and underserved communities, face significant challenges that hinder their ability to equip students with essential English skills. These challenges include limited resources, technology, access to authentic language practice, and non-formal education opportunities.
As an English Teacher, you will collaborate with local educators to strengthen English language proficiency through the creation of sustainable teaching materials and meaningful opportunities for language practice. As a native English speaker, your daily interactions with students and staff will naturally support language development. Together with your colleagues, you will foster community engagement and employability skills for a more prosperous future.

Required Skills

Bachelor's degree in any discipline.

Living Conditions

Volunteers serve in public schools located in small regional centers, towns, and villages across Georgia, outside the capital. During training and the first three months of service, they live with host families, and many choose to remain with their host families for the full duration of service due to the strong relationships and deeper cultural immersion this arrangement provides. Housing typically includes a private, lockable room and access to essential amenities such as a kitchen, bathroom, and at least one heated space. Conditions vary by community, and accommodations in rural areas may be more modest.

Activities

Plan and teach interactive, student-centered English lessons in a formal classroom setting to enhance students’ achievement in English.
Guide teachers to design, adapt, and/or pilot learning materials.
Support professional growth among English teachers through formal and informal English language practice.
Plan and facilitate recreational activities, tutoring sessions, and/or camps to support students’ English proficiency.
Plan and facilitate youth activities or events related to awareness days and/or volunteering opportunities.
Teach youth employability skills in an educational or instructional setting.
You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as leadership clubs or adult English conversation clubs

Training

As an English Teacher, you will be trained on effective ways to teach English as a second language and facilitate student learning. Peace Corps/Georgia will teach you the Georgian language to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community. You will also receive language resources and learn ethnic minority languages (Azerbaijani or Armenian) if you are placed in ethnic minority communities.
After 10 weeks of training, you will move to a rural or semi-urban community to your assigned public secondary school to collaborate with the English teacher counterparts, school administration, students/youth and community members and implement activities based on school/community priorities, locally available resources, and sustainable approaches.

Couple Living Conditions

Couples who are selected for the same sector will live together but work with different local partners, which may be in the same community or in neighboring communities (not more than 30 minutes apart)., Cohabitating couples are highly encouraged to present themselves as married throughout service due to cultural expectations.
