English Instructor and Curriculum Specialist

Are you an experienced educator looking for an international challenge? Classrooms in Georgia are looking for your support to strengthen English language learning.

Vocational colleges and public schools are oftentimes the only institutions accessible for Georgia’s youth to gain a free education. Despite recent efforts, the youth, particularly in rural and remote areas, have not been able to achieve universal command of the English language. Students range from beginner to advanced English capacity, making differentiated curricula and instruction critical for each student’s success.

As an English Instructor and Curriculum Specialist, you will collaborate with local teachers to incorporate advanced teaching methodologies, resources, and technology into English language instruction. Together, you will develop engaging activities and opportunities in and outside the classroom that foster language learning and bolster employability skills.

Required Skills

Competitive candidates will have one or more of the following criteria:

Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts in Education, preferably with a focus in curriculum/instruction
OR
Bachelor of Arts degree plus 3 or more years of relevant experience, including teaching and curriculum development, and teaching certification/license OR Master of Arts degree plus 2 or more years of relevant experience
OR
Specialized experience in one of the following areas: early childhood literacy, adult English education, vocational English education, or special education

Living Conditions

Volunteers will either live with a host family or on a college campus for first few weeks before they transition to independent housing in a mid-sized town or city.

Activities

Develop and facilitate English language lessons using advanced teaching methodologies.
Support teachers in developing teaching resources and adopting the use of technology.
Initiate student enrichment activities, such as clubs, camps, and competitions.
Identify opportunities to connect with local or international organizations and establish partnerships with professional colleges and schools.
Conduct English language classes for teachers, staff and community members.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as workshops for teachers and career fairs for students.

Training

After a 3-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to an urban community where you will collaborate with a public school or vocational college. You will work with the partner and your community to assess the local needs and develop a work plan in line with their established goals.

Peace Corps/Georgia will equip you with Georgian language resources and you may work with a local tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
