Engineering Internship - Summer 2027

Program Overview  

An internship with Securian Financial means an opportunity to create meaningful connections with established associates and fellow interns while exploring professional development in your field of study.  Our interns are connected to work that matters, helping to drive and deliver value for our customers with the support of great Securian team members at your side.  You’ll have the opportunity to interact with company leaders and learn from their career stories as well as get to know more about who we are as a company and the things we value – like our commitment to community through hands-on volunteer activities.  It will be a summer you won’t forget, that lays the foundation for potential careers ahead.  Join the Securian Financial team! 

At Securian, supportive leaders facilitate an environment where interns are provided mentoring and learning resources to acclimate them into the workspace.  Teams work collaboratively to achieve milestones and improvements.  Personal growth and development opportunities are prioritized and recognized.  We encourage and celebrate involvement in Associate Resource Groups around various Diversity & Inclusion initiatives. 

Summer internships are intended for undergraduate students graduating in December ’27 or May ‘28.  We are unable to pursue candidates who would require Visa sponsorship now or in the future. 

We are seeking candidates for internships in software engineering, data engineering, AI and machine learning engineering, data architecture, data management, and cybersecurity. 

Responsibilities will vary by role but could include: 

• Designing, developing testing, debugging, and maintaining new and existing systems as a member of an agile delivery team. 

• Designing, developing, and supporting data pipelines, data products, AI/ML workflows, and data platforms that enable analytics, reporting, and AI solutions. 

• Partnering with business and technology teams to understand data needs, improve data quality, and help ensure data is governed and managed effectively. 

• Exploring and implementing AI and machine learning solutions while helping establish scalable, responsible, and secure engineering practices, including model deployment, evaluation, and monitoring. 

• Creating engaging customer experiences, while ensuring our customers’ data is safeguarded. 

• Collaborating with team members to peer review deliverables and maintain team quality/standards. 

• Contributing to the engineering and operations of solutions to protect Securian Financial’s applications, computer networks and systems. 

• Harnessing the power of AI-code assistants to enhance innovation and efficiency. 

• Engaging with users and vendors to execute technology proof of concepts that validate use cases and the value of new solutions. 

• Onboarding new platforms and tools to ensure solutions are adopted effectively across the organization. 

• Partnering with your coaches and leaders to identify and execute on skill development opportunities and network connections. 

• Discovering professional career paths and validating personal growth journeys. 

Key technologies will vary by role but could include: 

• Back-End Development (Java, Python, Terraform, Spring Framework, REST APIs, Junit) 

• Web Development (JavaScript, NodeJS, Bootstrap, React) 

• Data & AI Engineering (Snowflake, SQL, Python, data management tools (Informatica, Reltio), MLE technologies (MLOps, MLFlow) 

• Cloud – AWS (EC2, Serverless, Lambdas, EKS, Security, Sagemaker, Bedrock) 

• AI – (Claude Code, ChatGPT, M365 CoPilot, GitHub CoPilot, Bedrock) 

• Versioning and Deployment (GitHub, Puppet) 

• Productivity (Jira, ServiceNow, MSOffice Suite) 

Qualifications: 

• Creativity and resourcefulness to problem solve both independently and as part of a team. 

• Sound analytical and design skills to understand and apply technical concepts. 

• Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work both independently, and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. 

• Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with team members. 

• Curiosity to pursue learning opportunities and further self-development. 

• Currently pursuing a four-year degree with a major in Computer Science, Data Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Business Administration, Engineering, or related degree preferred. 

 
Securian Financial believes in hybrid work as an integral part of our culture. Associates get the benefit of working both virtually and in our offices. If you’re within a commutable distance (90 minutes) you’ll join us 3 days each week in our offices to collaborate and build relationships. Our policy allows flexibility for the reality of business and personal schedules.
