Utilities and Energy Management (UEM) provides reliable and cost-effective electricity, chilled water, steam, deionized water, compressed air, emergency power, and elevator services for The University of Texas at Austin. We have more than 170 employees in five divisions: Utilities Operations; Utilities Distribution; Controls and Operating Technology; Finance: Technical Programs and Services; Sustainability: and Engineering and Resource Management.

Position Type

Part-time, paid internship during the academic year (approximately 10–20 hours per week). This is an onsite position with flexible schedule, arranged around the intern’s course load. Expected to Continue Until May 15, 2027.

Purpose

The Energy Analyst Intern supports the Utilities & Energy Management (UEM) team by assisting with day-to-day utility data monitoring and energy analysis. Working under the supervision of the Energy Analytics manager and other team members, the intern helps ensure utility data is accurate and reliable and contributes to routine analysis that informs energy and water efficiency decisions.

This is a learning-focused role designed for a current undergraduate or graduate student. The intern will gain hands-on experience with real-world energy data, analytical tools, and the workflows of a professional energy management team. No prior professional experience is expected.

Responsibilities

• Data Monitoring and Cleaning: Review meter data trends to help identify usage patterns and irregularities. Assist in verifying and cleaning energy and water meter data, flagging anomalies for review by senior staff. Help maintain organized, accurate datasets.
• Analysis Support: Assist the team with routine energy and water analysis, basic forecasting, and ad-hoc reporting requests. Compile and summarize data to support the Energy Analyst’s work. Help prepare charts and summaries that make findings easy to understand. Contribute to optimizing operations, enhancing energy and water savings.
• Learning and Collaboration: Work alongside the UEM team to learn energy management concepts, tools, and workflows. Participate in team meetings and ask questions to build understanding of the department’s mission and practices.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. Follow all University and UEM safety policies and procedures, take required safety training, and identify and report safety hazards to appropriate personnel. Perform work tasks in a safe manner, wear the proper personal protective equipment, and report near misses and incidents to appropriate personnel.

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled as a student at the University of Texas at Austin in engineering, computer science, statistics, data science or a related field, and currently classified as a Junior, Senior or Graduate student.
• Comfortable working with data in Microsoft Excel (sorting, filtering, formulas, basic charts).
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Exposure to data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
• Interest in energy, sustainability, or utility operations.
• Familiarity with basic programming or scripting (e.g., Python, SQL) is a plus but not required.

Equivalent combination of relevant education & experience allowed.
