Employee Health - Nurse Specialist (Supplemental)

Overview

The Employee Health Nurse Specialist provides relief coverage for all Legacy Employee Health offices. The Employee Health Nurse Specialist in consultation with the Employee Health Medical Director and team members provides direct nursing care, health education, and guidance for Legacy employees.  The Employee Health Nurse Specialist collaborates with the Legacy Infection Control team; the Risk Management Department and with the Legacy Safety Program, and other departments as needed to promote a safe and health work environment and maintain daily clinic operations.  Collaborates with internal and external partners to design, implement, and evaluate health education and wellness outreach projects.  Acts as liaison for Legacy employees who have experienced a disease exposure or injury.  Responds to queries from internal customers, facilitates positive communication and efficient resolution to employee health issues.  Performs on-call duties including occasional nights/weekends/holidays and responds in a timely manner.  Actively participates in department projects, clinics, and outreach including occasional nights/weekends/holiday shifts.

Responsibilities

Knowledge/Skills:

Demonstrated knowledge in Federal, State, and Local statutes and regulations affecting occupational health and safety, including Infection Control, OSHA and The Joint Commission standards.

A working knowledge in Safety and Loss Prevention, ergonomics, risks in the healthcare environment and available community resources.

Familiarity with Workers’ Compensation, ADA, benefits and insurance plans.

Demonstrated computer competency.

CLINICAL AND INJURY CARE

Provides assessment, treatment, and referral of occupational health injuries, illness, and other issues, and provides guidance and referral for non-occupational health issues for employees. Consults with and operates under the Orders of Employee Health Medical Director and Employee Health Nurse Practitioner.  Evaluates the effectiveness of care and modifies plan to ensure optimal employee care that is consistent with appropriate standards and laws. Communicates findings with the employee and other medical providers.

 Educates employees with consideration for literacy and culture to enhance compliance with treatment plan. Documents care and maintains accurate and complete employee health medical records in a confidential manner. Provides information and referral of employees to appropriate health care providers through Employee Assistance and other programs as appropriate. 

Responds to outbreaks, disease exposures, disasters, or other events that impact Legacy Health and may involve altered standards of care or altered duties as determined by the Incident Commander or Employee Health Manager.

Performs new hire employee health assessments, reviews immunization status, and facilitates drug screening process to ensure a new employee’s ability to perform the physical functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. 

 Represents the Employee Health Department on internal and external committees and workgroups.  Plans, tracks, and administers the immunization and TB testing programs, and evaluates for compliance.  Actively participates in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of health promotion, screening, and surveillance programs. Updates and maintains accurate Employee Health files and database records.

Collaborates with Legacy Infection Control and Prevention to monitor communicable disease outbreaks.  P Provides and facilitates immunizations and other prophylaxis to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

 Collaborates with Ergonomics to provide general workstation evaluation and recommend alterations in workstation ergonomics as appropriate.

 Remains current with federal and state regulations regarding immunization, communicable disease, and injury prevention and treatment.  Maintains knowledge of current treatment modalities and standards of care.

 Performs nursing assessments of various injuries and illnesses.   Provides first aid and minor care treatments, documents signs and symptoms, performs emergency care and facilitates provision of care by the health care team of the client.  Performs occupational health assessments and screenings for outside clients.

 Provides care to employees and other Legacy Health affiliated staff and their families.  Provides preventive and health educational services to community members and other public outreach.

 Performs after hours duties to include: coverage of rotating call schedule, respond to urgent epidemiological events, and to provide clinic coverage for occasional evening, night, holiday, or weekend staffing needs.

Advocates for the safety and well-being of employees and other affiliated personnel.  Intervenes on work practices and occupational environment to promote a culture of safety and to prevent dangers or unhealthy work conditions.

Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety Education and Training

Works in collaboration with manager, team members, and other multidisciplinary staff to identify work place hazards and implement measures to eliminate and/or minimize identified risks. Collaborates with Safety, Infection Control and other departments to ensure compliance with OSHA, The Joint Commission and other regulatory body standards. Educates employees on risk reduction strategies associated with occupational and environmental health and safety hazards.

Works in collaboration with manager, team members, and other multidisciplinary staff to design, implement, and evaluate outreach projects and communication strategies intended to promote the health and wellness of Legacy staff.  Outreach may include a variety of methods including publications, articles, lectures, interventions, posters, interviews, or review and creation of health education and training materials.

Actively participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of occupational and environmental health and safety education and training programs. Participates in committees and work groups regarding policy and procedure development and revision. Demonstrates and fosters compliance with laws and workplace policies regarding worksite safety. 

Maintains knowledge of internal resources and capabilities which might be used in the event of a local or regional emergency and/or disaster incident.  Remains current on local or community resources available on a variety of health and social issues.

Works in collaboration with manager, team members, and other multidisciplinary staff to identify health risks in the employee population and participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of programs to eliminate and/or minimize identified risks.

Acts as preceptor and oversight for students on clinical rotation assignment.  Provides training and direction of float and temporary staff working within the department.  Supervises unlicensed assistive personnel and collaborates with non-clinical department staff.

Complies and reports data to the Safety Committee and Infection Control Committee regarding Employee Health issues.

Qualifications

Education:

As required by licensure.  BSN or degree in progress strongly preferred. BSN may be required for specific assignments; experienced RNs without a BSN may be hired based on clinical experience with approval of the site CNO.

Experience:

Minimum two years of experience as an RN in acute or primary care setting.  Experience in Employee Health, Occupational Health, Infection Control, and/or Public Health Nursing preferred.

Licensure

Licensure:

Current applicable state RN license required. Both Oregon and Washington state RN licensure required within 3 months of employment.

BLS certification required.

Board Certified or successful completion of Board Certification for Occupational Health Nursing or Infection Control within 3 years of employment recommended.

Pay Range

USD $53.68 - USD $76.77 /Hr.
