Emergency Associate Veterinarian, Part-Time, Laboratory Animal Resources

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Emergency Associate Veterinarian, Part-Time, Laboratory Animal Resources at its Detroit campus location.

Position Purpose:

Provide after-hours, weekend, and holiday emergency veterinary coverage for research animals, ensuring prompt assessment, treatment, and stabilization to maintain animal welfare and regulatory compliance. Collaborate with research and veterinary staff to support continuity of care, maintain regulatory compliance, and minimize disruptions to ongoing studies. This position reports to the Senior Director, Department of Laboratory Animal Research (DLAR).

Essential Functions:

Provide emergency and on-call veterinary care to research animals by assessing, diagnosing, and treating illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies. Respond to after-hours emergencies, perform clinical procedures, administer treatments, provide pain management, and collaborate with research and animal care staff to ensure animal welfare and regulatory compliance.

Serve on a rotating schedule to provide after-hours, weekend, and holiday veterinary coverage, including responding to clinical emergencies and supporting the ongoing care and welfare of research animals.

Provide veterinary consultation and guidance to veterinary technicians and researchers regarding animal health, welfare, and clinical care concerns.

Perform necropsies as indicated and document findings to support animal health monitoring and research activities.

Respond to emergency facility issues, including equipment failures, environmental alarms, utility disruptions, and other incidents that may affect research operations, animal welfare, or facility safety. 

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:   Medical degree

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD, BVMS, BVM&S, BVSc, or equivalent veterinary medical degree) from a college or school of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education or an equivalent recognized veterinary accreditation body.

Training in laboratory animal medicine with American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine board certification or eligibility for certification is highly preferred. Other board certifications such as American College of Veterinary Surgeons, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, etc. will be considered. 

Additional degrees such as M.S. or Ph.D. are desirable. Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States and eligible to obtain veterinarian and controlled substance licenses in the state of Michigan within the first year of employment. Also requires United States Department of Agriculture accreditation or eligibility for accreditation.

Experience:    

Intermediate (3 to 4 years’ job-related experience).

3 years of research-related veterinary experience in an academic environment, preferably in an Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care accredited program is preferred.  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Veterinary medicine with emphasis on laboratory animal species (rodents, rabbits, etc.); emergency and critical care principles; rapid clinical assessment, triage, and decision-making in emergency situations; proficient in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions; clear and effective communication; ability to respond promptly and reliably to after-hours and weekend calls.

Clinical veterinary medical skills in disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surgery involving a broad range of species common to laboratory animal research.

Knowledge of state and federal regulations and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care accreditation standards. Eligible to provide veterinary care support of a federal facility as a part of a veterinary care team.

Strong problem-solving abilities including the ability to develop and monitor procedures for efficiency and accuracy. Proven ability to effectively supervise staff to attain organizational objectives.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively manage a variety of relationships with various stakeholders.

Demonstrated capacity for multi-tasking, flexibility in the face of changing priorities, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external colleagues to gain full understanding of the desired outcome in order to produce high quality and consistent results with assistance of team members; and provide support to teammates when tackling complex projects.

Proficiency with standard office software such as Microsoft Office products and ability to learn new software skills, as needed.
