The Director of Oral Surgery is a faculty leadership role responsible for the academic, clinical, and educational oversight of oral surgery instruction within the dental school. The Director provides subject-matter expertise in oral surgery and ensures that students receive comprehensive, well-supervised clinical training that supports competence in surgical assessment, treatment planning, and procedural care.

This role oversees the development, delivery, and continuous evaluation of oral surgery education across didactic and clinical settings, ensuring alignment with accreditation standards, institutional policies, and evidence-based clinical practice. The Director integrates oral surgery instruction into the broader dental curriculum and collaborates closely with course directors, clinical faculty, and staff to support a cohesive and consistent clinical learning environment.

Reporting to the Director of Clinical Education, the Director of Oral Surgery plays a key role in maintaining high standards of patient safety, clinical documentation, and quality assurance within oral surgery clinics. The position includes direct supervision and mentorship of students and faculty, guidance on clinical protocols and case complexity, and participation in interdisciplinary treatment planning. Through academic leadership, clinical oversight, and faculty collaboration, the Director contributes to the preparation of graduates who are competent, ethical, and practice-ready in oral surgery fundamentals.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development and Integration: Design, implement, and evaluate the oral surgery curriculum, ensuring alignment with accreditation standards and effective integration within the broader predoctoral dental program.
  • Integrated Didactic and Clinical Instruction: Provide coordinated didactic and clinical instruction using mastery-based, evidence-driven teaching approaches that engage learners and integrate biomedical science principles into patient-centered oral surgery care.
  • Clinical Supervision and Training: Lead and supervise oral surgery clinical education, guiding students and faculty in case selection, treatment planning, surgical procedures, and post-operative management.
  • Patient Care and Surgical Standards: Establish, implement, and monitor protocols for patient safety, surgical quality, and ethical clinical practice within oral surgery services.
  • Clinical and Educational Documentation: Ensure complete, accurate, and timely documentation of patient care, learner performance, and instructional activities in accordance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Faculty and Student Mentorship: Mentor and support faculty and students involved in oral surgery education, promoting clinical competency, professional development, and consistency in instruction.
  • Compliance and Accreditation: Ensure oral surgery education and clinical activities comply with institutional policies, state and federal regulations, and applicable accreditation requirements.
  • Research and Scholarship: Support and promote scholarly activity in oral surgery, contributing to academic advancement and the educational mission of the dental school.
  • Resource and Equipment Management: Oversee the appropriate use and maintenance of oral surgery equipment, instruments, and clinical resources to support effective teaching and patient care.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with other clinical disciplines to support interdisciplinary education, comprehensive treatment planning, and coordinated patient care.

Experience & Educational Background:

  • DDS/DMD or equivalent degree from a CODA-accredited dental school.
  • Completion of a CODA-accredited residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS).
  • Board certification or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS).
  • Eligibility for dental licensure in New York State.
  • Eligible for hospital privileges and sedation/general anesthesia, as applicable to the program's clinical scope.
  • At least five years of experience in clinical oral surgery, with a track record in academic instruction, curriculum development, and clinical supervision.
  • Familiarity with CODA accreditation standards, clinical calibration, and student competency assessment models.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, FERPA, OSHA, and laws/regulations pertaining to the practice of dentistry in New York State.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Oral Surgery Expertise: Advanced clinical knowledge of oral surgery procedures, treatment planning, and patient management appropriate to a predoctoral educational setting.
  • Clinical Teaching and Mentorship: Demonstrated ability to teach, supervise, and mentor students and faculty in clinical oral surgery while maintaining high educational and professional standards.
