POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Disciple Life provides pastoral leadership and oversight for the discipleship and Christian education ministries of First Baptist Atlanta (FBA). This role leads Family Ministries and Adult Life pastors, directors, and key staff; equips and develops teachers and volunteers; and provides direct teaching within FBA’s discipleship strategy. Under the leadership of the Executive Director, Ministries, the Director ensures all Disciple Life ministries are biblically grounded, Christ-centered, and aligned with the beliefs, values, and mission of FBA.
QUALIFICATIONS1. Must have a growing and mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ2. Must demonstrate pastoral leadership marked by integrity, humility, and spiritual maturity3. Must possess strong leadership skills and the ability to effectively lead pastors, directors, staff, and volunteers4. Must be an effective communicator with the ability to teach Scripture clearly and lead ministry teams5. Master’s degree from an accredited seminary preferred6. Minimum of ten years of ministry leadership experience in discipleship, Christian education, or spiritual formation7. Must support and model FBA’s culture and service expectations, including the Red Carpet Standard (H.E.A.R.T.) and 3M Strategy8. Must affirm, uphold, and teach in accordance with the beliefs, values, and mission of FBA
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS1. Provide pastoral leadership and vision for Disciple Life ministries in alignment with the mission, beliefs, and doctrine of FBA2. Lead, develop, and supervise pastors, directors, and key staff within Family Ministries and Adult Life3. Ensure all teaching, curriculum, and ministry practices align with Scripture, FBA’s Statement of Faith, and established ministry direction4. Develop and oversee a comprehensive discipleship and Christian education strategy across Disciple Life ministries5. Teach classes and discipleship environments as part of FBA’s overall discipleship strategy6. Guide direct reports in developing ministry opportunities that foster biblical fellowship, spiritual growth, and opportunities for individuals and families to encounter Jesus Christ7. Equip and develop staff, teachers, and volunteers for effective ministry and continued spiritual and leadership growth8. Guide pastors and directors in developing and stewarding ministry budgets consistent with biblical stewardship and responsible use of church resources9. Ensure Disciple Life ministries provide safe, secure, and well-prepared environments and follow appropriate safety, security, and child-protection practices10. Establish ministry goals and regularly evaluate effectiveness, growth, engagement, and opportunities for improvement11. Conduct performance evaluations for direct reports and provide ongoing coaching, accountability, and development12. Foster collaboration, unity, and healthy communication across Disciple Life and church-wide ministries ADDITIONAL DUTIES

- Model an authentic Christian witness through personal conduct, relationships, integrity, and servant leadership
- Participate in ministry events, outreach opportunities, and church-wide initiatives as required
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with applicable FBA and ministry policies

Founded in 1848 in the heart of downtown Atlanta, our church has been a light for Christ through the darkest times in our city’s history and through the most challenging times our nation has faced. For 172 years, God has sustained our church as each generation has acknowledged our dependence upon God and has sought to honor the truth of His Word, the Bible.
In 1971, the church elected Dr. Charles Stanley as senior pastor. In 1982, Dr. Stanley founded In Touch Ministries to broaden the reach of his pulpit ministry through media and to satisfy the growing demand for his messages across the country. Dr. Stanley can now be heard in every nation on earth.
Among our membership are people from 98 countries of origin, making us one of the most ethnically diverse congregations in America. We like to think that our congregation resembles the picture of heaven described in Revelation 5:9, where God’s throne is surrounded by those whom Christ had redeemed “out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.”
In the morning services on December 10, 2017, Dr. Stanley proposed to the church a Pastoral Succession Plan, naming the church’s associate pastor, Dr. Anthony George, as the future pastor of the church. The congregation adopted the plan by a unanimous affirmative vote.
On September 13, 2020, Dr. Charles Stanley announced his retirement to the congregation during the morning live stream, concluding his service as Senior Pastor and transitioning to Pastor Emeritus.
Dr. Stanley’s retirement resulted in the installment of Dr. Anthony George as our new Senior Pastor. We trust and pray that God will bring to pass Dr. Stanley’s encouraging words and that there will indeed be many great days ahead for First Baptist Atlanta.
