Digitalization Intern

Overview

The Digitalization Intern will support projects that improve how the cement plant collects, organizes, visualizes, and uses information. Working with Human Resources and cross-functional plant teams, the intern will help identify manual or inefficient processes, develop practical digital solutions, and document improvements that support safe, reliable, and efficient operations.

This internship offers hands-on exposure to a heavy industrial manufacturing environment and to the interaction among operational technology, business systems, data analytics, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Process, Quality, Safety, Human Resources, and IT personnel to understand business needs and identify digitalization opportunities.
• Assist with collecting, cleaning, validating, and organizing data from approved plant and business systems.
• Develop or improve dashboards, reports, and visual management tools that make operational and workforce information easier to understand and use.
• Support workflow automation and the digitization of forms, approvals, inspections, logs, checklists, and other recurring processes using company-approved platforms.
• Map current processes, identify pain points, and recommend practical improvements based on user feedback and available data.
• Test digital tools and enhancements, document results, track issues, and help coordinate user acceptance before implementation.
• Create clear process documentation, user guides, training materials, data dictionaries, and standard work instructions.
• Assist with employee demonstrations or training sessions and gather feedback to improve adoption and usability.
• Maintain confidentiality, follow data governance and cybersecurity requirements, and use only authorized systems and information.
• Present project findings, outcomes, and recommendations to plant leadership at the conclusion of the internship.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Currently pursuing an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Automation, or a related field.
• Completion of coursework or project experience involving data analysis, application development, databases, process improvement, or business technology is preferred.
• Prior internship, manufacturing, or industrial experience is helpful but not required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, particularly Excel; experience with Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, SharePoint, SQL, Python, or similar tools is preferred.
• Ability to analyze information, recognize patterns, troubleshoot problems, and translate user needs into clear requirements.
• Strong organizational, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with employees at multiple levels and across departments.
• Curiosity about manufacturing processes and a willingness to learn in both office and active plant environments.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, secure, and responsible handling of information.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Work will be performed in both office and cement manufacturing environments and may involve exposure to noise, dust, heat, cold, uneven surfaces, stairs, and industrial equipment.
• The intern must be able to safely access assigned plant areas and wear required personal protective equipment, which may include a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, gloves, and safety-toe footwear.
• The intern must comply with all company safety rules, site-specific requirements, and applicable Mine Safety and Health Administration requirements and training.
• The role may require sitting or standing for extended periods, walking through plant areas, climbing stairs, and occasionally lifting or carrying materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
