Job Description:

Engaged Scholar Activists work directly with the staff of the Center for Service Learning (CSL) to collaborate with faculty and students involved in curricular and co-curricular service/community-based learning. As the CSL collaborates with faculty and students in a plethora of ways, ESAs will be engaged in a wide variety of work. Each ESA will be engaged in unique work, which will be tailored to her/his strengths and to the CSL’s particular needs.

• Participate fully in a one hour meeting with the entire ESA staff on a weekly basis

• Participate fully in meetings, as necessary, with your smaller ESA mentorship team (CSL staff and ESA Director will serve as leads)

• Participate fully in required retreats/training

• Speak formally and informally behalf of the ESA Program, representing the program in front of classes, at required events, and in the halls of RU

• Serve as a conduit between the CSL and your designated academic department(s)

• Meet with faculty and your designated academic department(s) to brainstorm, create, implement, and evaluate curricular and/or co-curricular Service Learning (SL)/Community-Based Learning (CBL) opportunities (will generally happen in conjunction with either Melissa or Paul)

• Research potential SL/CBL opportunities to match particular academic goals and seek actual SL/CBL placements where viable match is determined

• Collaborate with CSL staff to write CBL curriculum pertinent to particular academic goals

• Introduce SL/CBL component to classrooms engaged in SL/CBL

• Locate and provide educational resources to determined classes engaged in CBL/SL Post SL/CBL class requirements for designated class(es) on the CSL website

• Mentor students seeking CBL/SL site placement for CBL/SL classes

• Recruit additional students to serve in leadership roles in classrooms engaged in SL/CBL

• Nurse semester-long relationships between the CSL and faculty/students engaged in CBL/SL, supporting faculty and students in their expressed needs

• Facilitate in-class debriefs on CBL/SL activities or small-group sessions outside of class

• Invite relevant guest speakers to classes, facilitating the full process of introducing them to the faculty, introducing them in class, thanking them, and getting them honorarium

• Serve as the liaison between the CSL and designated community organizations

• Participate in SL/CBL experiences and service immersions as relevant to your specified projects;

• Brainstorm, plan, implement, and evaluate curricular and co-curricular SL/CBL immersions in the Denver community (and potentially beyond)

• Form partnerships and serve as the CSL liaison with various student life departments/RUSGA/determined student groups

• Participate in two end-of-semester celebrations!

• Maintain good working relationships and open lines of communication with all engaged in the Program

• Submit a written report every other week to your mentor

Minimum Qualifications

• Strong leadership abilities

• Superior organizational, written, and speaking skills;

• Creative problem solving abilities

• Work exceptionally well in group environments;

• Experience working with individuals from other cultures and sensitivity to cultural differences

• Flexibility and a willingness to work with the challenging life circumstances of each unique student/faculty member

• Ability to maintain good working relationships and open lines of communication with all individuals engaged in the ESA program

• Outgoing personality, patience, a resourceful nature, positive outlook, strong sense of creativity, good organizational skills, and dependable nature required 

• Availability to earn full work study award

• Work will be done mainly in the classroom and the Regis community.

This position is benefits-eligible for workers’ compensation and will receive 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.
