Make an Impact Through Traffic Safety Education

This posting will create a pool of qualified applicants who may be considered, as needed, for temporary adjunct teaching assignments. This is not a full-time position. Adjunct instructors provide student-centered instruction, advising and support on a course-by-course basis.

Position Overview

Gateway Technical College invites applicants who are committed to higher education and to empowering individuals to achieve academic and career goals that lead to a competent workforce.

Adjunct faculty are temporary, part-time instructors hired to provide instruction, student advising and student support. Courses are assigned based on departmental needs and are subject to student enrollment.

Unless otherwise indicated, courses are delivered in a traditional face-to-face format on campus and not online. This instructor reports to the Dean, School of Protective and Human Services.

What You Will Do

Plan and Deliver Instruction

• Plan and teach courses that fulfill current curriculum goals and objectives.
• Prepare a course syllabus that includes course requirements, attendance requirements and grading criteria.
• Adhere to class schedules and meet attendance standards.
• Remain current in practices, trends and research related to the assigned area of specialization.
• Use appropriate assessment techniques to measure student progress toward course goals and objectives.

Support Student Success

• Assess student performance and advise students on academic issues.
• Identify students who need additional instruction to successfully complete course objectives.
• Provide additional instruction to students as needed.
• Check email or Brightspace for student rosters and other required information.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student matters.

Contribute to the College Community

• Participate in college, campus and department evaluation processes.
• Attend adjunct faculty meetings as scheduled.
• Interact constructively with resident faculty.
• Promote the education and training program.
• Participate in efforts to recruit and retain students and market Gateway.
• Comply with college policies, procedures and department guidelines.

What You Need to Succeed

Three Possible Qualification Pathways

Applicants must meet one of the following three combinations of education and occupational experience. The occupational experience must include at least one year within the last five years.

1. Completed a minimum of 45 hours in a traffic safety studies or accident prevention course, plus two years of occupational experience or a comparable amount of experience and education in traffic safety or a related field, such as driver education, law enforcement, fleet safety management, or a safety-related position with the Division of Motor Vehicles.
2. Completed a minimum of 45 hours in an accredited college-level course in AODA education or treatment, plus two years of occupational experience or a comparable amount of experience and education in AODA counseling, education, treatment or a related field, such as student assistance program director or employee assistance program director.
3. Completed a minimum of 45 hours in an accredited college-level course in group work methods, group counseling or group process, plus two years of occupational experience in group process work or group counseling as a treatment or education professional.

Required Certification and License

• Wisconsin Department of Transportation certification to teach TSS Group Dynamics, TSS Multiple Offender Program or TSS Driver Improvement, or willingness to obtain the required certification.
• Valid motor vehicle operator's license with fewer than six points accumulated within the last year, including any tickets received outside Wisconsin.

Preferred Education

• Bachelor's or master's degree in guidance counseling, psychology, behavioral studies or social work.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

• Working experience with computer software systems.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students.
• Ability to teach a wide range of related subjects.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Effective problem-solving skills.
• A flexible schedule to accommodate day, evening and weekend students.

Conditions of Employment

• Employment is contingent upon an acceptable background check.
• Candidates must meet employment eligibility requirements for the United States.
• Participation in competency-based professional development through the Faculty Quality Assurance System (FQAS) is required.
• Flexibility is required to accommodate day, evening and weekend students.
• Annual attendance at Gateway Technical College Adjunct Faculty In-Service is required.
• Gateway Technical College does not provide relocation assistance.

Work Authorization

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available.
