Data Engineer

Location: New York, NY or Remote within the U.S

About the Role 

We're looking for a Data Engineer to design and build a unified data platform bringing together our primary research data, third-party data, financial data, and business development information into a single, reliable system. This includes reconciling older historical data with newer data that has drifted over time, so we can run accurate long-term analyses. You'll also build the connections (APIs) between this system and the other software tools we use across the firm. 

This is a backend-focused role. You’ll be working with data pipelines, databases, and integrations rather than building user-facing interfaces or dashboards. We use off-the-shelf BI tools for reporting and visualization, so your focus stays on making the underlying data clean, connected, and reliable. 

What You'll Do 

• Build and maintain a central data warehouse that consolidates data from research, finance, deliberation, and business development sources 

• Design ETL/ELT pipelines to bring data in from internal tools and external vendors on a reliable schedule 

• Work through inconsistencies between older and newer datasets (changed formats, renamed fields, different collection methods) so historical and current data can be analyzed together 

• Build and maintain APIs connecting our internal systems to third-party software (CRM, accounting/finance tools, research platforms, and similar) 

• Set up sensible access controls and data-handling practices for sensitive financial and confidential records 

• Monitor data quality and troubleshoot pipeline issues as they come up 

• Keep documentation current — a data dictionary and clear notes on where data comes from and how it flows, so the system doesn't become a black box 

• Partner with our BI/reporting tool setup (e.g., Metabase, Looker Studio, Power BI) to make sure data feeding into dashboards is accurate — building the dashboards is not required 

What We're Looking For 

• 3+ years of professional experience in data engineering, backend development, or a closely related role 

• Strong working knowledge of SQL and Python 

• Experience building or maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines (tools like Airflow, dbt, or similar are a plus, but we're open to candidates who've done this with other stacks) 

• Comfort designing or working with REST APIs and connecting to third-party services 

• Experience with a cloud data warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, or similar) — or strong SQL fundamentals and a willingness to ramp up on ours 

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience 

• Comfortable working independently and communicating clearly about data issues to non-technical colleagues 

Nice to Have (Not Required) 

• Experience reconciling historical/longitudinal datasets, especially from survey or research data 

• Familiarity with data governance or compliance practices for financial or confidential records 

• Prior experience in a legal, research, or professional services environment 

What Success Looks Like in the First Year 

• Core historical and current datasets are consolidated into one system, with a clear record of how legacy data was reconciled 

• Key third-party integrations (at least the top 2-3 external tools we rely on) are connected and syncing reliably 

• Documentation exists so that a new hire or vendor could understand the system without you having to explain it from scratch 

• Data quality issues are caught proactively, not after someone downstream notices something's wrong

New York Base Salary Range: $120,000–$150,000 annually

This range represents the base salary DRC reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position when performed in New York. For candidates working remotely from another approved location, the applicable salary range may differ based on geographic market and applicable law. The final base salary will be determined based on legitimate business considerations, including the candidate’s experience, education, qualifications, specialized knowledge, skills, and work location.

Candidates outside New York will be provided with the applicable compensation range for their approved work location. Any additional compensation for which the position is eligible, such as a discretionary bonus or incentive compensation, will be communicated separately.
