You'll join Zillow Group's Legal & Compliance team, a collaborative group that helps the business innovate responsibly by providing practical, thoughtful guidance across our products and operations. This team partners closely with colleagues across procurement, sourcing, finance, information security, privacy, and people organizations to support contracting, data use, and regulatory compliance in ways that are clear, actionable, and aligned with Zillow's customer-first mission. Together, the team brings a balanced, solutions-oriented approach to managing risk while enabling progress.

About the role

The Counsel, Contracts provides practical, business-focused legal support to Zillow Group, advising on a range of matters such as contracts and regulatory compliance for assigned products or programs. Operating with moderate autonomy, this role interprets applicable laws and rules, helps design compliant solutions with cross-functional partners, and escalates higher-risk or novel issues to senior attorneys as appropriate.

You Will Get To

• Provide day-to-day legal advice and support for assigned products, programs, or business lines, balancing legal risk with business objectives.

• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, terms, and related documentation — including vendor MSAs, SaaS and software agreements, professional services, benefits, and recruiting agreements — with internal and external stakeholders, escalating complex or high-risk matters to senior counsel as appropriate.

• Interpret and apply relevant laws, regulations, industry rules, and data-use requirements to product features, workflows, and business processes, collaborating with product, engineering, and operations teams to implement compliant solutions.

• Investigate, assess, and help resolve legal issues, complaints, and escalations related to assigned workstreams, coordinating with litigation, privacy, compliance, or other specialist teams as appropriate.

• Develop, maintain, and continuously improve guidance, playbooks, templates, and knowledge resources to drive consistency, efficiency, and compliance in recurring legal work.

• Educate and train business partners on key legal requirements, risk considerations, and standard processes to enable informed decision-making and scalable, compliant operations.

• Partner with senior attorneys on strategic initiatives, cross-functional projects, and emerging issues, contributing legal analysis, issue spotting, and recommendations.

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $136,300.00 - $217,700.00 annually. This base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations.

In Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia the standard base pay range for this role is $129,500.00 - $206,900.00 annually. The base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location. Employees in this role will not be paid below the salary threshold for exempt employees in the state where they reside.

Who you are

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school with active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, in good standing.

• 4–6 years of experience practicing law, with in-house or law firm experience supporting technology, media, financial services, or real estate–related clients preferred.

• Demonstrated experience advising on regulatory, commercial, or product counseling matters, including interpreting and applying applicable laws, rules, or industry standards to business activities.

• Proven ability to manage a moderate portfolio of matters or workstreams with limited supervision, including prioritizing issues, meeting deadlines, and collaborating effectively with cross-functional partners.

• Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
