Corps Accountant

Job Details: Job Location: ALM-Baton Rouge LA Corps - Baton Rouge, LA, Education Level: N/A, Salary Range: $23.68Hourly, Job Category: Finance, This position is responsible for:

Performs computerized double-entry bookkeeping tasks for an assigned Corps and CSRC requiring continued compliance with standards unique to the CSRC Program with multiple and varied programs and separate sets of books requiring intermediate knowledge of the principles and practicesof fund accounting and knowledge of the varied programs' unique needs in order to properly record and maintain precise fiscal records and financial data; applies fundamental bookkeeping knowledge and skills to varied bookkeeping tasks such as posting, checking entries, issuing checks, balancing accounts, and preparing financial reports for assigned accounts; prepares and maintains financial records in an accurate, complete, and timely manner while ensuring the integrity, security and accountability of Salvation Army financial accounts.  Keeps the Commanding Officer and local Advisor Board abreast of the financial condition of the local unit at all times and provides recommendations and solutions regarding potential issues of concerns. Serves as liaison to Divisional Headquarters and ensures the accurate and complete submission of financial data and reports in accordance with Divisional Headquarters standards and schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

Plans and administers all Corps and CSRC accounting functions for  a variety of programs and accounts in accordance with established Salvation Army policy and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and FASB Standards; ensures that all accounting transactions are processed in an accurate and timely manner.
Maintains a thorough understanding of the unique CSRC operations; analyzes the condition and nature of the business affairs to ensure that all accounting entries are accurate and made in a timely manner; anticipates potential problems and makes adequate adjustments where needed; recognizes the impact of potential errors and ensures that financial practices are adhered to so as not to jeopardize the CSRC's National Program standing.
Serves as financial liaison to the Finance Committee of the local Advisory Board; reviews, approves, and releases all monthly financial information concerning the various accounts; assists in preparing the Advisory Board agenda for all items which impact the local financial position.
Post non-cash assets to ledger in accordance with current furnishings and equipment guidelines; calculates and posts depreciation in accordance with current SA depreciation schedule; maintains inventory of all non-cash assets.
Posts and maintains a variety of ledgers for all Corps books i.e. Corps, CSRC, Thrift Store, Women's Auxiliary,Home League, FEMA, and other programs unique to the Corps; enters income, expense, and balance sheet data into computerized financial systems; proofs entries to verify accuracy, completeness and integrity; prepares and makes journal entries, balances accounts, anticipates potential problems and prepares month-end-reports.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

Ability to keypunch information into a computer.
Ability to sort and file documents alphabetically and numerically.
Ability to perform routine and complex mathematical computations repeatedly, rapidly and accurately.
Ability to operate various general office equipment including a computer and 10-key calculater.
Ability to work well under the pressure of deadlines.
Ability to follow instrutions and work independently with limited supervision.
Ability to effectively and efficiently work on multiple projects at the same time without becoming frustated or disorganized.

Working Conditions:

Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief of occasional periods of standing or walking.
Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.0 5-10%  of work time.
Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

"WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOU": EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, bookkeeping, business or related field,

and

Two years experience in the performance of increasing complex bookkeeping work utilizing a computerized accounting system (Great Plains preferred) with some exposure to double-entry fund accounting,

or

any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
