About the Role

ModSquad is executing a brand-led marketing strategy. We're looking for a contract editorial writer who covers our category the way a trade journalist or industry analyst would – someone who already knows the outsourced customer support trust & safety landscape, and follows what the vendors and platforms are actually doing.

This is not a content marketing role. We're looking for someone who can interview our executives, read the industry data critically, surface the stories buried inside our client work, and shape all of it into pieces that people running digital operations actually want to read – published under our leaders' names and placed with the publications their peers already read.

If you've covered this beat at a trade publication, worked as an industry analyst, built original research that others cited, or ghostwritten executive bylines that didn't sound like press releases, we should talk.

What You'll Do

Editorial & Executive Voice

• Ghostwrite executive articles for owned, social, and external distribution channels
• Interview internal SMEs, clients, and partners to extract story angles and original perspectives
• Develop sponsored editorial and co-authored pieces for targeted trade publishers
• Support live programming – office hours, panel appearances, recurring conversations with senior ModSquad voices – including prep, framing, and turning recordings into written pieces

Research & Category Analysis

• Track the CX, trust & safety, moderation, and outsourcing landscape – competitor positioning, vendor claims, analyst coverage, regulatory movement – and tell us where our point of view has room to land
• Build data-led editorial: original surveys, benchmark analyses, state-of-the-industry pieces, and commentary grounded in real numbers
• Read industry research critically and translate it into an argument a practitioner can use
• Identify the stories our competitors are not telling

Client Storytelling

• Partner with Account Management and Sales to identify client stories worth telling
• Develop anonymized or attributed client stories that are specific and authentic, not templated
• Build a repeatable process for sourcing, quantifying, and clearing client stories – including getting to business outcomes, not just a list of services delivered

What We're Looking For

Experience

• Demonstrated experience covering or analyzing at least one of: customer experience, contact centers, BPO/outsourcing, trust & safety, content moderation, enterprise SaaS, or digital operations
• A track record in journalism, trade publishing, industry analysis, or research writing – not general content marketing
• Demonstrable executive ghostwriting, with published examples
• Experience producing or interpreting original research – surveys, benchmark data, industry datasets

Skills

• You can pull a story out of a 30-minute conversation with a busy executive
• You can take a pile of ideas or a rough brief and build a coherent, logical argument
• You know how trade publications work: pitching editorial angles, sponsored content, co-authorship, and when each is the right call
• You can name the publications, newsletters, and analysts that matter in this category
• Comfortable in plain text workflows, Markdown, and GitHub
• You know how to diagram a sentence, apply the Paramedic Method from Revising Prose, or have read Several Short Sentences About Writing more than once and have thoughts about how to apply it editorially
• You're allergic to AI slop
• You're already thinking about how to improve this job description

Mindset

• Operates with editorial judgment, not just execution; pushes back when a brief doesn't have a story yet
• Fast and self-directed; sets their own production pace without heavy oversight
• Comfortable working as an independent contractor alongside an in-house team

Compensation & Structure

• This engagement is structured as an independent contractor arrangement and does not include employee benefits.
• The initial engagement will run for six months, with the possibility of extension based on business needs and project volume.
• The engagement is fully remote. Some availability during Pacific business hours may be needed for executive interviews and live programming; otherwise, the contractor may perform the services asynchronously.
• The contractor will work with the Content & Creative Production team and collaborate with the Head of Brand and VP of Marketing.
• Services will be requested on an as-needed basis, and weekly hours may vary depending on project volume.
• Compensation will be paid hourly. The contractor will track time through Teambridge Systems and submit monthly invoices for services performed.
• All work product created under the engagement will be subject to the intellectual property and work-product provisions of the contractor agreement.

Location Restrictions

U.S. Candidates: This engagement is not available to individuals who will perform services from New York City, New York, or Jersey City, New Jersey. Contractors must perform services from an eligible U.S. location outside those jurisdictions for the duration of the engagement.
