About the Position

The Content Communications Manager creates compelling, accurate content that connects the work of the Internet Society and Internet Society Foundation with the audiences we seek to engage. As part of the Content Communications team, you will turn complex programs, technical topics, and people’s experiences into accessible stories across blogs, video scripts, social media, and other formats.

Working within the Unified Communications Strategy, you will work closely with the empowerment team (fellowships, alumni, and learning) to clarify communication needs, recommend effective approaches, and connect their work to broader organizational priorities. The role combines hands-on content creation with planning, advice, and coordination, with approximately 60% of time focused on content production.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Content creation and editorial quality

• Write and edit engaging blogs, impact stories, video scripts, social media copy, and other communications materials, adapting the message, tone, and structure to each audience and format.
• Research topics, interview participants and experts, and verify facts, quotations, and claims of impact against source materials. Represent people and their experiences accurately and respectfully.
• Deliver well-developed content ready for standard editorial review, applying brand, style, accessibility, and approval guidelines consistently.
• Develop creative briefs and scripts, and guide video producers, photographers, and designers through clear direction and actionable feedback, coordinating with relevant communications colleagues.

Program partnership and communications planning

• Build a strong understanding of Empowerment’s programs, audiences, milestones, and communications needs. Lead working meetings, ask clarifying questions, and translate requests into practical recommendations.
• Advise colleagues on objectives, audiences, formats, and timing. Explain recommendations constructively, offer alternatives, and balance program needs with communications priorities and available capacity.
• Apply the “All-of-ISOC” approach by connecting Empowerment stories with the organization’s broader work in connectivity, advocacy, safety, and community engagement.
• Identify storytelling opportunities and contribute to integrated campaigns and program launches, agreeing priorities and the approach to major initiatives with the Director, Content. 

Coordination and delivery 

• Plan assigned work from brief through delivery, mapping responsibilities, dependencies, deadlines, and review stages. Maintain the editorial calendar and the relevant project-tracking systems.
• Coordinate directly with colleagues responsible for design, social media, email, web, media, and community engagement, involving them early and following through on agreed handoffs.
• Make day-to-day content and delivery decisions within agreed priorities. Bring recommendations to regular check-ins and involve the Director when appropriate.
• Stay informed about organizational developments through internal channels, program materials, and conversations with colleagues. Share relevant insights and connect opportunities across teams.
• Work with colleagues responsible for measurement to assess content performance and use audience insights to improve messaging, formats, and future content. Explore relevant storytelling practices and recommend useful approaches.

Desired Qualifications

• At least six years of relevant experience in communications, journalism, or content development, including substantial hands-on writing and experience advising internal stakeholders.
• A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
• Exceptional and proven English writing and editing skills, demonstrated through a portfolio of clear, accurate, audience-focused content across multiple formats.
• Strong editorial judgment, including interviewing, fact-checking, accurate quotation and attribution, and the ability to explain complex programs or technical topics in accessible language.
• Demonstrated experience developing creative briefs and creating or guiding video scripts, with a track record of working effectively with creative suppliers such as video producers, photographers, and designers.
• Ability to lead productive meetings, make evidence-informed recommendations, and discuss competing needs diplomatically while building constructive working relationships.
• Strong planning and follow-through, with the judgment to manage assigned work, coordinate with specialists, and recognize when guidance or a broader decision is needed.
• Curiosity, initiative, and a demonstrated ability to learn about an organization’s work and apply feedback. Ability to collaborate across cultures, teams, and time zones.
• Ability to communicate with accuracy, sensitivity, and inclusive language appropriate to a mission-driven organization, and a commitment to an Internet for everyone.

Preferred experience

• Experience in a nonprofit or international organization, and using content performance insights to improve communications.      
• Communications experience related to Internet issues, technology, digital inclusion, or the technical community.

Compensation and benefits for this position will be paid in local currency and based on the country and geographic location’s local salary and benefits market data for the position. Exact pay will be based on factors including but not limited to relevant qualifications, experience, geographic location, education, business and organizational needs.
