Job Description:

This recruitment will be used to fill 2 part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) College Finances Student Coaches for the College of Business at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Center for Advancing Financial Education (CAFE) is seeking a College Finances Coach to help students and families navigate college finances and develop the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to make informed financial decisions. Through one-on-one coaching, workshops, presentations, and outreach efforts, College Finances Coaches educate students and families about college financial wellness topics, connect individuals with valuable resources, and support student success. College Finances Coaches participate in ongoing training and professional development that build communication, critical thinking, leadership, and career-readiness skills. This role provides opportunities to collaborate with a diverse campus community, gain experience in public speaking and peer education, and make a meaningful impact on student financial well-being.

No prior financial knowledge is required, and students from all majors are encouraged to apply. Comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided, and College Finances Coaches develop the knowledge and confidence needed before conducting appointments or presentations independently. 

Pay rate for this position is $16.55 per hour.

Position Duties:

90% - Support CAFE College Financial Wellness Initiatives

• Conduct one-on-one appointments, utilizing active listening, effective communication, and coaching strategies to help students identify solutions and make informed college financial decisions.

• Analyze student questions and financial situations to connect students with appropriate campus, state, and federal resources.

• Develop and deliver engaging presentations, workshops, and outreach activities that educate students, families, and community members about financial wellness topics.

• Assist in planning, coordinating, and evaluating financial wellness events, educational materials, and program resources to improve student engagement and learning outcomes.

• Foster an equitable and inclusive environment by respectfully engaging with students and families from diverse backgrounds, identities, cultures, and financial experiences.

• Participate in ongoing professional development, training, and reflective learning opportunities that expand knowledge of college financing, financial wellness, and peer coaching.

10% - Other Duties as Assigned

• Utilize Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Teams, Workday and other web-based technologies to support communications, scheduling, data management, assessments, and project coordination.

• Support outreach efforts, marketing initiatives, social media engagement, tabling events, BA 140 support, and extension programs throughout Oregon.

• Contribute ideas and feedback to improve program effectiveness, student outreach, and operational efficiency.

Position Duties: Summer

80% - Support Launch Orientations and College Financial Wellness Initiatives

• Conduct one-on-one appointments, utilizing active listening, effective communication, and coaching strategies to help students identify solutions and make informed college financial decisions.

• Communicate college financial information to incoming students and families during Launch orientation programs through presentations, tabling, appointments, and other outreach activities.

• Guide students and families in understanding college costs, financial aid resources, budgeting concepts, and available support services.

• Conduct appointments using critical thinking, problem-solving, and resource navigation skills to address student financial questions.

• Collaborate with CAFE student and professional staff to plan, facilitate, and evaluate orientation and financial wellness programming.

• Develop and prepare educational materials, resources, and presentations that support student learning and engagement.

• Participate in ongoing professional development, training, and reflective learning opportunities that expand knowledge of college financing, financial wellness, and peer coaching.

20% - Other Duties as Assigned

• Support outreach efforts, assessment efforts, team projects, and operational needs.

• Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study

• Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment

• Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

  • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term

  • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*

  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term

  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Required Qualifications:

• Must be academically enrolled and meet all OSU student employment eligibility requirements.

• Demonstrated interest in helping others achieve their educational and financial goals.

• Willingness and ability to develop expertise in college financing, financial wellness, and peer coaching through ongoing training and professional development.

• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, or willingness to develop these skills through mentoring and presentation experiences.

• Ability to actively listen, ask thoughtful questions, and engage respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize responsibilities in a dynamic environment.

• Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and handle sensitive information professionally.

• Demonstrated reliability, accountability, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.

• Ability to learn and effectively utilize Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and other workplace technologies.

• Must be able to work at least 10 hours per week.

• Must have access to a working laptop.

• Must be based in Corvallis and able to work during the academic year and summer.

• Must have at least two academic years remaining at OSU before graduation and be interested in continued employment with CAFE. 

Additional Required Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience facilitating workshops, presentations, peer education, tutoring, mentoring, customer service, or other helping roles.

• Demonstrated commitment to creating welcoming and inclusive environments for individuals from diverse backgrounds.

• Preference given to students with at least three remaining academic years before graduation and a demonstrated interest in continued employment with CAFE.

• Bilingual communication skills and ability to support students and families in other languages.

• Eligible for Federal Work Study.

• Experience using technology platforms for communication, scheduling, outreach, or data management. 

Working Conditions/Schedule:

• Must be available to work in person during the academic year and summer to support CAFE programs, including summer Launch orientation sessions, one-on-one appointments, events, and special projects.
• Student employees are expected to attend required weekly team meetings, professional development sessions, and ongoing training throughout the academic year.
• Work will occur primarily in CAFE office spaces and may also take place remotely, in classrooms, auditoriums, and other campus or community locations depending on program and presentation needs.
• Must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. Work schedules are determined based on student availability and departmental needs.
• This position offers scheduling flexibility; hours are primarily scheduled during weekdays but may occasionally include evenings or weekends to support events, presentations, and outreach activities.
• Must be comfortable interacting with students, families, staff, and community members in both individual and group settings.
