Coding Specialist II

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Coding Specialist II based in the United States.

This role provides specialized professional-fee coding and billing support within a complex academic healthcare environment.
You will focus primarily on pain management and critical care services, ensuring provider documentation accurately supports billed services.
The position combines detailed medical coding expertise with compliance, reimbursement, documentation review, and billing support.
You will work closely with clinicians, billing teams, administrators, and other stakeholders to resolve coding questions and documentation issues.
The role also provides opportunities to educate clinical teams on coding requirements, regulatory updates, and billing best practices.
Success requires a strong commitment to accuracy, productivity, timely charge capture, and adherence to evolving healthcare regulations.
This is primarily a remote position with flexible working hours based on departmental needs and manager approval.

Accountabilities

• Review provider documentation in Epic to ensure professional services are accurately, completely, and compliantly coded.

• Initiate and manage documentation queries through Epic In Basket, Outlook, or other appropriate channels when clarification is required.

• Assign CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes in accordance with applicable federal, state, payer, and organizational guidelines.

• Ensure accurate and timely charge capture and resolve coding edits before claim submission.

• Coordinate billing information and verify that charges are complete and properly supported.

• Accurately enter and maintain coding and billing information in Epic and other applicable systems.

• Maintain a coding accuracy rate of 95% or higher while meeting departmental productivity expectations of approximately 8–15 codes per hour.

• Complete assigned coding work within established turnaround-time requirements and departmental standards.

• Resolve coding, documentation, and billing issues with providers before claims are submitted for processing.

• Serve as a resource for professional billing policies, documentation standards, coding questions, and reimbursement requirements.

• Monitor updates from CMS, AMA, CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, payer bulletins, coding publications, and relevant regulatory organizations.

• Communicate applicable coding, billing, and regulatory changes to providers and colleagues when appropriate.

• Assist with implementing coding, workflow, and process changes as business and regulatory requirements evolve.

• Identify opportunities to improve coding accuracy, compliance, workflow efficiency, and appropriate reimbursement.

• Participate in coding quality reviews, compliance initiatives, and continuing education activities.

• Support billing and collection teams by resolving coding-related claim edits and identifying issues that could delay billing or reimbursement.

• Respond to coding inquiries and provide guidance that supports accurate charge submission and timely reimbursement.

• Perform other duties and projects as assigned based on departmental priorities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.

• At least 2 years of professional-fee coding experience in a hospital or healthcare environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.

• Completion of a medical records coding program through an accredited college or comparable coding education is preferred.

• Current Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification is required.

• Current coding certification through AAPC or AHIMA, such as CPC, RHIA, RHIT, or CCS, or an equivalent recognized certification.

• Strong working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, medical terminology, and applicable coding and reimbursement regulations.

• Proficiency with Epic and Microsoft Word and Excel.

• Strong attention to detail and demonstrated commitment to coding accuracy and compliance.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with clinicians, billing professionals, administrators, and other stakeholders.

• Ability to work independently while consistently meeting productivity, quality, and turnaround-time expectations.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for resolving documentation, coding, and billing issues.

• Ability to stay current with changing coding standards, payer requirements, and healthcare regulations.

• Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Experience with pain management and critical care professional-fee coding is strongly preferred.

• Training through an accredited coding program is advantageous.

• College coursework in anatomy and physiology, CPT, ICD-10-CM coding, or related subjects is a plus.
