Job Summary

The CNA Intern is a high school senior participating in a structured, paid internship program following successful completion of the Elma High School Nursing Assistant Training Program. CNA Interns serve as peer mentors to first-year CNA students and engage in supervised clinical experiences in Summit Pacific Medical Center’s Acute Care Unit and Emergency Department. This role contributes to SPMC’s “Grow Your Own” initiative, creating a pipeline of compassionate, competent local healthcare professionals.

Interns must meet all Washington State labor regulations for minors and maintain an active Nursing Assistant – Registered (NA-R) status during the internship. CNA Interns will receive high school credit in up to two of the following three categories: Career & Technical Education (CTE), Lab Science, and/or English.

Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Serve as a classroom team leader, mentoring first-year CNA students and assisting with lab practice and peer support.
• Perform direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, within the CNA scope and Washington State labor limitations.
• Assist with basic care activities: vital signs, bathing, positioning, feeding, toileting, mobility support, and communication with patients.
• Support department staff in maintaining clean, safe patient environments by preparing rooms, stocking supplies, and sanitizing equipment.
• Engage in learning-focused rotations in Acute Care and Emergency Department settings.
• Participate in ongoing education, competency validation, and reflective learning assignments as directed by Clinical Education.
• Adhere to all L&I guidelines regarding work hours, rest and meal breaks, and documentation of Parent/School Authorization and Special Variance (if applicable).
• Demonstrate professionalism, a commitment to learning, and a positive attitude with staff, patients, and peers.
• Comply with all hospital policies, safety standards, and privacy regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned within the educational scope of the internship.
• Participate in and successfully complete assigned Phlebotomy training sessions, competency assessments, and supervised practice.
• Complete all documentation and steps required for MA-P phlebotomy certification and maintain active status throughout the internship.

Required Education and Experience

• Current high school senior enrolled in the Elma High School CNA Internship Program.
• Successful completion of the Elma High School CNA Training Program.
• Active Certified Nursing Assistant (NA-C) credential in the State of Washington, including successful completion of both the Washington State written and skills exams.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Completion of required Phlebotomy training and successful application for Medical Assistant–Phlebotomist (MA-P) certification with the Washington State Department of Health within the first semester of the internship.
• Must be eligible to work under Washington State Department of Labor & Industries teen labor laws and submit all required Parent/School Authorization and Special Variance forms prior to the internship start date.

Required Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations

• Certified Nursing Assistant (NA-C) in the State of Washington
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Medical Assistant Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Foundational knowledge of patient care practices within the Certified Nursing Assistant (NA-C) scope, including vital signs, hygiene support, mobility assistance, nutritional support, and infection prevention.
• Demonstrated understanding of basic medical terminology and clinical communication practices appropriate to the healthcare setting.
• Commitment to patient safety and comfort, with the ability to follow standard precautions, infection control protocols, and delegated clinical procedures.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to follow oral and written instructions, document observations clearly, and communicate respectfully with patients, staff, and peers.
• Interpersonal maturity and professionalism, with the ability to maintain confidentiality, show empathy, and engage respectfully with patients of all ages and backgrounds.
• Willingness to learn and adapt, including responding positively to feedback, adjusting to new situations, and actively participating in clinical instruction and mentorship.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a healthcare team, demonstrating accountability, reliability, and an eagerness to contribute.
• Basic computer and technology skills, including the ability to learn electronic medical records (EMR) systems and complete training through Summit Pacific’s Learning Management System (LMS).
• Strong attention to detail, including the ability to accurately record and report patient data, recognize changes in patient conditions, and follow care plans.
• Awareness of developmental and cultural considerations, demonstrating sensitivity in patient interactions and contributing to a positive care environment.
