Claims Manager- Commercial Auto Excess Casualty

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Claims Manager – Commercial Auto Excess Casualty based in United States.

Lead a specialized claims team handling high-severity commercial auto excess casualty claims, including complex coverage and catastrophic injury matters.
You will provide technical and operational leadership while ensuring claims are handled accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and contractual requirements.
The role combines deep casualty expertise with modern technology, structured data, and automation to improve claims outcomes and reduce administrative burden.
You will coach adjusters on coverage, litigation, negotiation, reserving, and complex claim decision-making while maintaining high quality standards.
Working cross-functionally, you will partner with underwriting, actuarial, compliance, product, engineering, and account management teams.
You will also engage directly with clients, carriers, MGAs, brokers, and other stakeholders to communicate claim trends, performance, and loss mitigation strategies.

Accountabilities:

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Commercial Auto Excess Casualty Claim Specialists, fostering technical excellence, collaboration, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
• Provide coaching and oversight on coverage analysis, litigation strategy, negotiation, catastrophic injury evaluation, and high-severity claim management.
• Conduct regular file reviews, performance assessments, quality audits, and performance management activities while supporting hiring, retention, and training.
• Oversee complex excess casualty claims from intake and investigation through evaluation, settlement, recovery, and closure, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
• Maintain claims-handling best practices and ensure consistent use of structured-data workflows and modern claims technology.
• Partner with Product and Engineering teams to improve automation, adjuster workflows, system capabilities, and operational efficiency.
• Monitor key performance indicators including cycle time, accuracy, severity trends, customer satisfaction, and reserving adequacy.
• Serve as a subject matter expert for clients, MGAs, carriers, brokers, and internal stakeholders, providing guidance on complex claims and emerging exposures.
• Collaborate with Underwriting, Actuarial, Account Management, Compliance, and Claims Operations teams to identify trends, risk patterns, and opportunities for loss mitigation.
• Participate in client meetings, audits, stewardship reviews, and new program onboarding activities.
• Prepare and present claims reports, metrics, and analysis while advising clients on claim trends and mitigation strategies.
• Guide adjusters through litigation strategy, counsel management, complex coverage matters, and high-value settlement decisions.
• Review and approve significant settlement recommendations, coverage positions, and strategic claim decisions.
• Develop approaches to mitigate fraudulent claims and ensure adherence to legal, regulatory, internal, and contractual requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
• Support the continued development of a technology-enabled claims environment by identifying opportunities to improve processes, automation, and team effectiveness.

Requirements:

• 10+ years of commercial auto liability or casualty claims experience, including experience with high-severity claims or excess layers.
• 5+ years of management experience, with remote team leadership experience preferred.
• Previous leadership experience within a carrier, TPA, or MGA environment.
• Deep technical expertise in coverage analysis, litigation management, catastrophic injury evaluation, and complex casualty claims.
• Strong understanding of claim reserving, investigation, evaluation, settlement, recovery, and litigation processes.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, clients, carriers, MGAs, brokers, and other partners.
• Comfortable using technology and data to improve claims systems, workflows, efficiency, and outcomes.
• Active adjuster license in the resident state where available, or a Designated Home State (DHS) license where applicable, with willingness to obtain additional required licenses within 60 days.
• Demonstrated commitment to quality, accuracy, attention to detail, integrity, ethics, and accountability when handling confidential and sensitive information.
• Bachelor's degree in insurance, business administration, or a related field is preferred.
• Professional designations such as CPCU, SCLA, AIC, or equivalent are preferred; a JD is a strong plus.
• Experience with MGAs, E&S carriers, or technology-enabled TPAs is preferred.
• Familiarity with structured-data workflows, AI-assisted claims tools, or modern claims platforms is a plus.
• Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to challenge inefficient processes and develop better approaches.
• Empathetic and collaborative leadership style with the ability to balance detailed claim analysis with broader business and client objectives.
