SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator or Human Resources depending on the nature of each assignment.

POSITION SUMMARY: The University Investigator serves as part of a centralized institutional investigation and resolution team responsible for reviewing and responding to a wide range of University complaints, reports, and policy concerns. Investigators are cross-trained to conduct impartial assessments, investigations, and resolution processes involving civil rights matters, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) concerns, workplace misconduct, employee relations issues, student complaints, retaliation concerns, whistleblower complaints, bullying, and other University policy violations.

The University Investigator may serve in multiple roles within the University’s resolution processes, including but not limited to Intake Officer, Process Advisor, Hearing Facilitator, Decision-Maker, Appellate Officer, Informal Resolution Facilitator, Administrative Review Support, and Investigator, provided they are not serving in a conflicting role within the same matter.

The University Investigator supports the University’s commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, equitable, and compliant educational and workplace environment by conducting prompt, reliable, thorough, and impartial reviews of reported concerns in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and University policies.

Not all complaints or concerns reported to the University will proceed through a formal investigative process. While certain civil rights, EEO, and Title IX matters may require formal investigative processes under applicable law or University policy, Human Resources-related concerns may be addressed through a range of resolution approaches, including consultation, administrative review, managerial intervention, or investigation, as determined appropriate by the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources or designee. The University Investigator assists in assessing reports and determining appropriate response pathways, which may include supportive measures, consultation, educational interventions, informal resolution, administrative review, managerial action, or formal investigation.

This position is paid per diem and is ineligible for benefits.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conducts prompt, reliable, equitable, and impartial assessments and investigations involving alleged violations of University policies and procedures.
• Investigates concerns including, but not limited to:
  • Harassment and discrimination
  • Sexual misconduct and Title IX-related concerns
  • Retaliation
  • Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) complaints
  • Workplace misconduct and employee relations concerns
  • Bullying and abusive conduct
  • Whistleblower and ethics-related complaints
  • Other institutional policy violations as assigned
• Works collaboratively with the Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator, Human Resources, Student Life, Academic Affairs, Campus Police, General Counsel, and other University officials as appropriate.
• Conducts intake meetings and preliminary assessments to determine applicable policies, jurisdiction, and appropriate resolution pathways.
• Gathers, reviews, and analyzes relevant evidence, including documentation, electronic communications, records, security footage, and witness statements.
• Conducts interviews with complainants, respondents, and witnesses using trauma-informed, impartial, and culturally responsive practices.
• Maintains detailed and accurate records, including investigative timelines, interview notes, evidence logs, correspondence, and case documentation.
• Assesses credibility and analyzes information in accordance with applicable policy, institutional standards, and investigative best practices.
• Prepares comprehensive investigative summaries and reports outlining relevant evidence, factual findings, and policy analysis, as appropriate.
• Assists with supportive measures, referrals, safety planning, and coordination with campus resources when appropriate.
• May assist with informal resolution processes, educational interventions, restorative approaches, or other administrative resolutions when appropriate and permitted by policy.
• May serve in other institutional process roles including, but not limited to:
  • Intake Officer
  • Process Advisor
  • Hearing Facilitator
  • Decision-Maker
  • Appellate Officer
  • Informal Resolution Facilitator
  • Administrative Review Support
    provided they are not serving in a conflicting role within the same matter.
• Participates in annual and ongoing training related to investigations, civil rights compliance, employment practices, trauma-informed interviewing, retaliation, behavioral intervention, and applicable laws and policies.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned or needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and investigatory experience. Prior experience conducting investigations, workplace reviews, compliance assessments, employee relations matters, student conduct reviews, or other fact-finding processes preferred. Experience working in higher education is strongly preferred. Strong written and oral communication skills required. Computer literacy and experience using Microsoft Office, Google applications, case management systems, and electronic recordkeeping systems preferred.
