CELT Office of Energy Transformation Fellow (part-time/temporary)

General Summary of Position:

As part of the Massachusetts Clean Energy and Environment Legacy Transition (CELT) Initiative, the Office of Energy Transformation (OET) Fellow will work with the Massachusetts Office of Energy Transformation to assist in advancing policies, programs, and initiatives to implement the state's climate and clean energy mandates affordably, equitably and sustainably. This is a 12-month placement to start in January 2027. This opportunity is open to all students statewide, regardless of their college/university, location, or field of study.

The OET Fellow will assist in developing the strategic execution of focused work groups, depending on interest and alignment of skill sets, related to the gas-to-electric transition, readying and decarbonizing the electric grid, pursuing alternative mechanisms to finance investments in the electric utility distribution grid, enabling sustainable economic development, and more as they are added. The OET Fellow will also help support with additional projects such as the convening of an Energy Transformation Advisory Board, the execution of regional community meetings to share information about the work of the OET, maintaining a stakeholder database, and more dependent on needs, capacity, and skillset.

This position will collaborate with the Executive Director of the Office of Energy Transformation, other OET Fellows as well as CELT Municipal fellows, staff of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, and other consultants and stakeholders as needed. This is a hybrid position with at least one day a week required to be in-person at the Office of Energy Transformation in downtown Boston.

Key Responsibilities:

• Research and Analysis: Conduct research and analysis to support decision making among the focus area work groups (FAWGs) on relevant topics.
• Meeting Planning and Support: Directly manage and support meetings related to assigned projects. This includes developing agendas and materials, facilitating small group discussions, taking detailed notes, providing in-person support for set-up and facilitation, and summarizing discussions, outcomes, and next steps. 
• Stakeholder Outreach Engagement: Directly manage support staff carrying out day-to-day efforts related to operations and programming. Build and maintain community relationships to enrich and diversify local partnerships.
• Collaboration and Peer Support: Attend regular check-in meetings with other OET fellows, monthly meetings with the UMass Lowell CELT team, and other sessions as needed to share progress, raise questions on energy-related topics, and collaborate on solutions to challenges to support peers.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Credits toward a Bachelor’s or graduate degree in sustainability, environmental, engineering, business, finance, sciences, policy, or related field. 
• Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills; able to work independently or collaboratively, with a client-services mindset and a diplomatic approach.  
• Commitment to learning and growth. 
• Experience with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and SharePoint.  
• Self-starter who takes initiative, is resourceful, and consistently delivers tasks and projects on time

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience with data management, querying, and spreadsheet development as it pertains to work-related tasks and deadlines, including, for example, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PowerBi and/or other data and metrics management/tracking programs. 
• Experience developing, implementing, and managing projects and/or programs related to sustainability, energy system operations and management, building operation and management, power plant operations and management, finance, or GIS mapping. 
• Demonstrated experience with project management, stakeholder engagement, and event/meeting planning.
