POSITION

The College of Business and Economics Deans office at CSU Fullerton invites applications for its BUAD 100 Foundations of College Success and Lifelong Learning Teaching Associates Pool.

We welcome applications from current CSUF graduate students to teach in the following: 

The Teaching Assistant (TA) for BUAD 100 supports the instructor and the course, and leads the second half of each class session, during which students break out of a large lecture into smaller groups of about 30–35 first-year students. In this portion of each class session, TAs help students engage more deeply with the material by facilitating interactive activities and discussions that build on the lecture and align with course learning objectives. TAs contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and supportive classroom environment grounded in diversity, equity, and inclusion, where all students feel comfortable participating. They grade assignments and provide feedback, communicate regularly with students, meet weekly with the instructor, and assist with course preparation as needed. This role requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to connect with and support students, stay organized, and respond to student needs while maintaining professional boundaries. TAs are student-centered, enjoy working with students, and are committed to supporting student growth and success.

Duties:

• Manage and lead a classroom of 30-35 first-year students.
• Plan and facilitate class sessions using interactive and engaging activities that align with course learning objectives and promote active student participation.
• Provide in-person classroom support and administrative duties, and manage disruptions or inquiries.
• Communicate course expectations, deadlines, and updates clearly to students.
• Utilize Canvas to support course activities, communicate with students, and manage course materials.
• Grade assignments, quizzes, and exams in accordance with established rubrics, offer constructive feedback to support student growth, and maintain accurate and confidential records of student performance.
• Assist in preparing course materials, including collaborating with the instructor to develop and revise content and assignments, and researching relevant topics and best practices for student engagement.
• Communicate regularly with the instructor to discuss upcoming lectures, assignments, and student progress.
• Attend weekly meetings with the instructor to enhance teaching skills, discuss best practices, align instructional strategies, and report on student progress.
• Manage time effectively to ensure completion of grading and class preparation, and demonstrate reliability and professionalism in completing assigned responsibilities.
• Respond to student questions and concerns in a timely, professional, and empathetic manner.
• Foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that encourages participation from all students.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and refer students to campus resources when concerns extend beyond the scope of the TA role.
• Seek feedback from the instructor to improve teaching and support strategies.
• Other administrative duties as assigned.

Hours:
This role requires approximately up to7 hours per week, including attending scheduled class time on Fridays from 9:00 AM – 11:45 AM and a one-hour weekly meeting following class. Additional time will be dedicated to grading, preparation, and communication. Outside of required meetings, the schedule is flexible.

This is a pool of Teaching Associates for the department to draw on as necessary.
APPOINTMENTS FROM THE POOL ARE TEMPORARY AND OFTEN MADE JUST PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACADEMIC TERM. APPLICANTS MAY BE OFFERED EMPLOYMENT ON VERY SHORT NOTICE.

REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS

• Currently enrolled CSUF graduate student (Master’s and Doctorate) in Education, Communications, Counseling, Social Work, or Humanities & Social Sciences
• Candidates should demonstrate their ability to interact and work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, including first-generation college students
• Completion of at least one semester of graduate coursework.
• Good academic standing (graduate GPA of 3.0 or above).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster positive interactions and respond to student concerns with professionalism and empathy.
• Ability to build rapport with students and encourage their engagement and progress toward academic success.
• Ability to present information clearly and confidently in a classroom setting, manage classroom dynamics, and effectively guide discussions.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and ability to create a respectful and inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries, exercise sound judgment, and recognize when to refer students to appropriate resources.
• Demonstrated commitment to ethical conduct, including maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive student information with discretion.
• Availability to attend all scheduled class sessions, weekly meetings with the instructor, and occasional course-related events or meetings.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Prior experience teaching, facilitating, or leading group instruction.
• Demonstrated ability to design and implement interactive, student-centered learning activities.
• Experience working with or supporting first-year college students.
• Knowledge of student development concepts and common challenges faced by first-year students related to academic adjustment, stress, and well-being.
• Experience providing feedback and grading student work in a clear, timely, and constructive manner.
• Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) and basic instructional technology.
• Ability to identify and effectively manage conflict.
• Knowledge of campus resources.

COMPENSATION

All Teaching Associate appointments are made under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the United Auto Workers.  Initial appointments are for one semester only.  

Classification Range: $3,245 to $7,598 per month
Anticipated hiring range depending on qualifications, not to exceed $5,200

The full-time monthly base salaries indicated above are prorated to the time base assigned.

Teaching Associates rehired at CSUF after a break in service of 12 or more months who have not had a CSUF background check within the past 12 months will be subject to a new background check; rehire is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of the new background check.
