Canvass Lead Door-to-Door Voter Outreach

Job Details: Job Location: Houston, TX - Houston, TX, Position Type: Seasonal, Salary Range: $22.00 - $26.00Hourly, MF Professional Services, Inc. (MFPS) is seeking an experienced Canvass Lead to oversee a small team conducting door-to-door voter outreach on behalf of its clients, including Mi Familia Vota and Mi Familia en Acción.

The Canvass Lead directs the daily activities of approximately four to five canvassers, including conducting team launches, assigning turf, distributing materials, monitoring field activity, providing coaching, reviewing data, and completing daily reports. The Canvass Lead also participates directly in door-to-door canvassing and voter-registration activities as needed.

This field-based position requires substantial outdoor work, frequent walking, flexible scheduling, accurate recordkeeping, and strict compliance with voter-registration, safety, and data-security requirements.

Essential Responsibilities

Lead the daily activities of approximately four to five door-to-door canvassers.

Conduct pre-shift launches covering goals, scripts, turf assignments, safety information, check-ins, and reporting expectations.

Prepare and assign residential canvassing turf using VAN, MiniVAN, maps, spreadsheets, or other approved tools.

Distribute voter-registration forms, literature, mobile devices, identification, and other field materials.

Ensure canvassers understand their assignments, geographic boundaries, scripts, and daily goals.

Monitor field activity, maintain regular team check-ins, and respond to operational or safety concerns.

Shadow canvassers in the field and provide coaching on door approaches, approved messaging, voter engagement, data collection, and professional conduct.

Conduct door-to-door voter outreach and voter-registration activities when needed.

Engage community members respectfully using approved scripts, talking points, and materials.

Review voter-contact results, registration forms, and daily reports for accuracy and completeness.

Track doors knocked, successful contacts, registrations, turf completion, and other assigned performance measures.

Enter or upload canvassing results into VAN, MiniVAN, spreadsheets, databases, or other approved systems.

Maintain custody and tracking records for voter-registration forms and sensitive voter information.

Ensure all completed, incomplete, spoiled, and unused voter-registration forms are secured and returned by established deadlines.

Immediately report suspected falsification, misconduct, data manipulation, form mishandling, or other compliance concerns.

Coordinate team deployment, breaks, transportation, return times, and end-of-shift procedures.

Monitor weather, neighborhood conditions, missed check-ins, and other potential field-safety concerns.

Promptly report attendance, performance, conduct, safety, or compliance concerns to management.

Foster a respectful, inclusive, professional, and accountable team environment.

Accurately record all hours worked and follow organizational timekeeping requirements.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Previous door-to-door canvassing, voter-registration, campaign, community outreach, field organizing, or civic-engagement experience required.

Previous experience leading, training, coaching, or supporting a canvassing or outreach team preferred.

Strong leadership, communication, coaching, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to establish clear expectations, monitor performance, and provide constructive feedback.

Ability to prepare and assign turf, manage field logistics, and meet reporting deadlines.

Experience using VAN, MiniVAN, mobile canvassing applications, spreadsheets, or comparable technology preferred.

Strong attention to detail and ability to review voter-registration forms and field data accurately.

Dependable, punctual, organized, and comfortable working directly with employees and community members.

Ability to remain professional during difficult or unexpected interactions.

Experience working with Latino or diverse communities preferred.

Professional proficiency in English and Spanish preferred.

Ability to work flexible morning, evening, weekend, and campaign-style schedules.

Ability to travel throughout the assigned service area.

Must satisfy any voter-registration eligibility, training, or certification requirements applicable in the assigned jurisdiction.

If driving is required, the employee must maintain a valid driver’s license, legally required automobile insurance, an acceptable driving record, and access to a safe and reliable vehicle unless an organizational vehicle is provided.

Physical and Work Requirements

This is a field-based position requiring extended periods of walking and standing outdoors. The Canvass Lead must be able to canvass and supervise employees in residential neighborhoods; navigate sidewalks, stairs, uneven surfaces, and varying terrain; and work in changing weather conditions.

The position requires the ability to carry outreach materials weighing up to 25 pounds and regularly use a mobile device, computer, clipboard, voter-registration forms, and other field equipment. Reasonable accommodations will be considered for qualified individuals with disabilities.
