The Campus Safety Officer is responsible for patrolling campus grounds, monitoring facilities, and ensuring the safety of students, faculty, and staff. They also handle emergency situations, enforce college rules, and perform routine maintenance on institutional vehicles.

Job Description

Position Summary:  Ensures the safety of faculty, staff, and students and monitors facilities, ensuring compliance with college rules and dealing with emergency situations.

THIS IS A WEEKEND SHIFT POSITION- PART TIME  (12 hour shift) 

Duties and Responsibilities:  (*Indicates non-essential function) 

  1. Patrols campus during nighttime hours, checks boilers and other equipment for proper operation and reports unusual situations.  Provides escorts on campus as needed.
  2. Checks outside windows in dorms and windows and doors in all campus buildings, including Greek houses, the Campus Village, Fife Avenue, and College Commons. 
  3. Deals with students or other persons on campus who are in violation of college rules in a reasonable but effective manner.
  4. Exercises judgement and contacts proper authorities when situation warrants.
  5. Answers radio/telephone for emergency calls as needed, including weekends and holidays.
  6. Performs routine maintenance assistance and servicing of institutional vehicles.  Periodically assists custodial staff where needed.
  7. Serves as an on-call person to help cover special events.  Assists in covering for absence of other officers.
  8. Attends department meeting and special training programs outside normal work schedule.
  9. Periodically checks all parking lots to ensure that vehicles are safe.   Checks for illegally parked vehicles and issues tickets or has them removed.
  10. Locks and unlocks buildings as scheduled. 
  11. Performs related duties as needed or as assigned.

Performance Standards: 

  1. Performs assigned responsibilities in an accurate, timely and effective manner with minimal supervision and meets established timelines for special assignments.
  2. Exhibits requisite skills and knowledge and an appreciation for confidentiality.  
  3. Makes positive contributions to effective teamwork within the work unit and with other college departments.
  4. Strives for excellence in performance of responsibilities and in meeting needs of clients/students served.
  5. Knows and observes college and departmental policies, guidelines and procedures.

Qualifications: 

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.  Specialized training in safety and security plus at least six months of security experience highly desirable.  
  2. Possession of an Ohio driver’s license.
  3. Evidence of a high degree of maturity and dependability, with the ability to make sound judgements and deal with emergency situations.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals who may require persuasion or other appropriate action. 
  5. Ability to write reports and maintain records and logs. Background in investigations helpful.
  6. Willingness to independently work night shifts.
