Business Systems Analyst Intern

Fundamental Objective:         

The IT & Business Systems Intern will gain practical, hands-on experience supporting Pacific Ag’s core technology platforms while   contributing to business intelligence, data analysis, geospatial mapping, and day-to-day IT operations. The intern will primarily support Power BI reporting and SQL, ESRI ArcGIS geospatial tools, and IT help desk functions. Working alongside the IT team, the intern will contribute to real-world projects while developing technical and collaborative skills in reporting, GIS, version control platforms such as GitHub, and AI-assisted productivity   tools, including Copilot, ChatGPT, and Claude.    

Essential Functions:        

A) Power BI, Reporting & SQL Support:        

1) Assist with the development, maintenance, and testing of Power BI reports and dashboards under the guidance of senior analysts.    

2) Assist with writing, executing, and troubleshooting basic SQL queries to retrieve, clean, and validate data from SQL Server.    

3) Support data transformation processes in Power Query and assist with basic data modeling tasks.    

4) Assist in documenting report logic, data sources, and refresh schedules.    

5) Explore and apply AI-assisted tools, such as Copilot, ChatGPT, and Claude, under supervision to support data cleaning, draft SQL and DAX queries, and streamline documentation.  

B)  ESRI ArcGIS / GIS Support:      

1) Assist with maintaining and updating geospatial maps, dashboards, and field data collection tools.   

2) Support data entry and quality assurance checks for spatial datasets and feature layers.    

3) Assist in preparing maps and visualizations to support Farm Operations stakeholders.    

4) Develop foundational knowledge of ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro while assisting end users with routine questions.    

C) General IT Support:    

1) Provide day-to-day help desk support, including basic troubleshooting and service ticket management.    

2) Assist with mobile device management (MDM) tasks, including MaaS360 administration, cellphone ordering coordination, and the creation of email accounts and user profiles.    

3) Support Active Directory user management tasks, including account creation, updates, and password resets, under supervision.    

4) Assist with maintaining IT documentation, inventory records, and knowledge-base articles to ensure information remains accurate and up to date.    

5) Utilize GitHub or similar version control tools to organize and track scripts, queries, and configuration files while gaining hands-on experience with version control fundamentals, including repositories, commits, and pull requests. 

D) Cross-Departmental Collaboration & Learning:    

1) Participate in IT team meetings, project check-ins, and training sessions to gain insight into IT operations, project coordination, and professional development.    

2) Document processes, procedures, and key learnings to support the development and maintenance of internal knowledge-base content.    

3) Explore and recommend ways AI tools and modern productivity software can streamline reporting, GIS, and IT support workflows.   

4) Complete assigned learning projects and present a summary of key accomplishments, and skills gained at the conclusion of the internship.    

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:        

A) Basic understanding of or strong interest in databases and reporting concepts, including SQL, Excel, and Power BI. Relevant coursework or self-directed projects are welcome.   

B) Familiarity with GIS concepts and tools, such as ArcGIS, or a strong willingness to learn.    

C) Comfortable using AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Copilot, or Claude, to support research, writing, analysis, and technical tasks.   

D) Working knowledge of Git/GitHub fundamentals, including cloning repositories, committing changes, and creating pull requests, gained through coursework, personal projects, or professional experience.   

E) Strong attention to detail, with a proactive approach to asking questions and seeking clarification when needed.   

F) Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document work and communicate information effectively.   

G) Ability to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks with guidance and direction from a supervisor.   

H) Ability to maintain confidentiality of company information.        

Education:           

A) Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree or certificate in Information Systems, Computer Science, GIS, Data Analytics, Business, or a related field.    

Minimum Qualifications & Work Experience:       

A) No prior experience required. Coursework, personal projects, hackathons, or class assignments involving SQL, Power BI, GIS, or GitHub are highly valued.   

B) Hands-on experience with at least one AI platform, such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, or Gemini, gained through coursework, personal projects, or self-directed learning. Experience may include developing effective prompts, using AI to write or troubleshoot code, or exploring advanced capabilities such as custom GPTs, Claude Projects, Claude Code, and other AI tools or integrations.   

C) Familiarity with Git/GitHub, including experience creating repositories, making commits, or collaborating on projects using version control.   

D) Basic proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, Teams, and SharePoint.   

E) Preferred: Interest in agriculture, agribusiness, or agricultural operations in the Central Valley.              

Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions:       

A) General office environment: work is generally sedentary in nature but may require standing and walking for up to 10% of the time. The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc.   

B) Office physical demands: incumbent frequently is required to sit; stand; walk; stoop, kneel, or crouch, and use hands to finger motion to handle, feel, grip, or operate objects, office tools, or office equipment; occasionally will climb stairs; use balance; and use foot control movement to operate company vehicles.   

C) Repetitive office motions: the employee will make frequent and substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; and head and neck movements.   

D) Office lifting demands: ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.   

E) Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and making fine discriminations in sound.   

F) Express or exchange of ideas by means of the spoken word; including those activities where there should be detailed instructions of importance that must be communicated to workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.   

G) Office incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, and/or viewing a computer terminal.
