Burn Program Manager - Department of Surgery (50%25)

Position Summary

The Burn Program Manager is responsible for coordinating the operational, quality, performance improvement, verification, outreach, and regulatory activities of the UI Health Care Burn Program. As Iowa's only burn center, the program serves as the state's tertiary referral resource for specialized burn care, education, prevention, rehabilitation, and recovery services.

Working collaboratively with the Burn Medical Director and multidisciplinary burn team, the Burn Program Manager supports compliance with American Burn Association (ABA) Burn Center Verification standards and maintains continuous readiness for verification and reverification activities. The position coordinates program performance improvement activities, supports burn registry and quality reporting functions, facilitates statewide outreach and referral development efforts, and advances strategic initiatives that improve patient outcomes, access, and program performance.

The Burn Program Manager serves as the primary coordinator for Burn Program verification readiness, performance improvement, quality oversight, outreach, prevention, education, and multidisciplinary program operations. Registry personnel and data abstraction functions remain organizationally aligned within the Trauma & Burn Quality Program infrastructure to promote standardization, operational efficiency, and consistent performance monitoring across trauma and burn services. The Burn Program

Manager works in close partnership with registry, analytics, quality, and operational leaders to ensure the integrity of burn program data, regulatory compliance, and continuous program improvement.

The position also oversees human resource functions such as creating new roles, supervising performance, and managing all aspects of the burn registry and associated personnel.

Position Responsibilities

ABA Verification and Regulatory Compliance

• Coordinates ongoing readiness activities for ABA Burn Center Verification and reverification.
• Maintains documentation, evidence files, standards crosswalks, and compliance records necessary to demonstrate adherence to ABA standards.
• Coordinates preparation for verification reviews, site visits, and regulatory assessments.
• Monitors compliance with applicable federal, state, institutional, and accreditation requirements.
• Partners with program leadership to identify and address opportunities for compliance improvement.

Performance Improvement and Patient Safety

• Coordinates the Burn Program Performance Improvement (PI) process.
• Facilitates multidisciplinary review of burn cases, complications, outcomes, and patient safety events.
• Tracks corrective actions and ensures loop closure of identified improvement opportunities.
• Develops and maintains program dashboards and reports.

• Collaborates with Quality & Safety teams to support organizational quality initiatives.

Program Operations and Administration

• Coordinates operational activities supporting burn program functions across the continuum of care.
• Facilitates multidisciplinary meetings and committees.
• Assists with annual program planning, goal development, and strategic initiatives.
• Supports development and maintenance of burn-related policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines.

• Serves as a liaison among clinical departments supporting burn patient care.

Registry, Data Analytics, and Reporting

• Partners with registry and analytics resources to ensure accurate and timely burn program data collection and reporting.
• Monitors burn volumes, referral patterns, transfer activity, quality metrics, and patient outcomes.
• Supports participation in national benchmarking and burn quality reporting programs.

• Prepares reports for program leadership, executive leadership, and external organizations.

Outreach, Prevention, and Education

• Coordinates burn injury prevention and community outreach activities.
• Supports educational programs for referring hospitals, EMS agencies, learners, and healthcare professionals.
• Assists with statewide referral development efforts.
• Supports burn survivor and rehabilitation-related initiatives.

• Promotes awareness of burn services throughout Iowa and the surrounding region.

Education Requirements

• Master of Science in Nursing degree required

Experience Requirements

• Three years of progressively responsible experience in healthcare operations, quality, program administration, trauma, burn, emergency medicine, surgery, critical care, rehabilitation, or related clinical services.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary initiatives and managing complex projects.
• Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN).
• Experience working in a burn center, trauma center, academic medical center, or other highly regulated specialty program.
• Experience supporting accreditation, verification, or regulatory compliance activities.
• Knowledge of American Burn Association Burn Center Verification standards.
• Experience with performance improvement, quality management, registry operations, or healthcare analytics.
• Certification in healthcare quality, project management, burn nursing, or related specialty area.
