ABOUT THE ROLE

Under the direction and guidance of the Membership Director, and consistent with the mission, policies, and guidelines of the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the Building Monitor is responsible for diligently monitoring the facility to ensure a safe environment for all members, staff, and guests. Safety in this role includes maintaining awareness of potential hazards (such as equipment misuse, facility maintenance issues, or unsafe behaviors), proactively addressing risks before they escalate, and ensuring that YMCA policies and procedures are followed to protect the physical and emotional well-being of the community. The Building Monitor also serves as the first line of support for emergency situations and member conflict resolution, enforcing center policies with professionalism and a strong commitment to creating a secure, welcoming, and respectful environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Safety & Policy Enforcement: Monitor all service areas, uphold YMCA policies and the member code of conduct, and address unsafe behaviors or conditions promptly
Incident & Emergency Response: Serve as first response for incidents, conflicts, and evacuations in alignment with the Emergency Procedures Manual; escalate appropriately.
Facility Rounds & Documentation: Conduct scheduled safety and locker-room checks; document issues; complete end-of-shift summaries and communicate key updates to the Leader on Duty.
Member Services: Support access control, check-ins, brief tours, and queue management during peak times; assist frontline staff as needed.
Member Experience & Inclusion: Create a welcoming environment; model YMCA core values and inclusive behaviors; engage members and program participants with professionalism.
Communication & Coordination: Maintain clear, timely communication with staff, volunteers, and leaders to resolve issues and keep operations running smoothly.
Training & Readiness: Maintain current CPR/First Aid (within 90 days of hire) and attend required trainings/meetings.
Other Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support safe, effective operations.

ABOUT YOU

  Qualifications

High School diploma with at least 3 years’ experience in customer service or other related fields required.
CPR and First Aid certification is required within 90 days of hire.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule. Expected schedule to include evening and weekend hours.
Experience in customer service, facilities, recreation, security, or related fields preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated ability to positively engage and communicate with individuals of diverse backgrounds and ages.
Calm, professional judgment under pressure; able to de‑escalate conflicts and follow incident procedures.
Attention to detail during facility rounds and the ability to complete accurate incident and shift reports.
Working knowledge of—or willingness to learn—YMCA policies, emergency procedures, and access systems.
