A Day in the Life of a Biomedical Intern

The Biomedical Intern provides entry-level support to the Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) team while gaining hands-on experience in a clinical environment. Under the direct supervision of experienced Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMET), the intern assists with routine maintenance, safety testing, calibration, and basic troubleshooting of a limited scope of medical devices ensuring exposure to hospital operations, medical device management, and regulatory compliance that support patient safety and reliable healthcare delivery.

Here is What You Will Be Doing:

• Assists with systematic preventive and scheduled maintenance of basic medical devices in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safety guidelines.
• Shadows and assist BMET staff in diagnosing routine equipment malfunctions, replacing basic parts, and observing corrective repairs.
• Learns to document service events, performance tests, and work orders accurately within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Accompanies technicians into clinical departments to observe equipment utilization, assist with device transport, and learn proper infection control protocols.
• Gains familiarity with healthcare technology compliance standards, including The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements.
• Assists with test equipment setups and inventory audits and participates in department learning opportunities.

Desired Skills:

• Basic knowledge of general hand tools, multimeters, and basic test equipment.
• Fundamental knowledge of basic electronics, electromechanical systems, and basic mathematics/physics.
• Basic computer literacy skills and familiarity with standard office software.
• Ability to read basic electronic schematics or block diagrams.
• Strong communication skills (oral and written) and ability to learn in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to follow safety guidelines and maintain respectful professional relationships with team members, clinical staff, and hospital guests.

Here is What You Need:

• One of the following:
• Enrollment in a Biomedical Equipment Technology or related degree program
• Recent graduate (less than one year) of a Biomedical Equipment Technology or related degree program

Nice to Have:

• Customer service experience
• General hands-on technical experience
• Pursuing or obtained Certified Associate in Biomedical Technology (CABT)
