POSITION:               Biologist II-Senior

SALARY:                   $ 30.88 - 40.37, per hour

REPORTS TO:        Subdivision Manager 

LOCATION:               Nespelem, WA 

Basic Functions:      This is a Non-Exempt position.  The Biologist II-Senior is responsible for implementation of objectives outlined in the Chief Joseph Kokanee Enhancement Project (CJKEP) in the Fish and Wildlife's Resident Fish Division. Duties will include, but are not limited to, hiring and supervising staff, developing research protocols purchasing necessary supplies, data collection, data quality control, data analysis, and report writing all within specific project deadlines. Projects will include, but are not limited to, redd surveys, stream/habitat surveys, electrofishing (backpack and boat) surveys, gillnetting surveys, hydro acoustic surveys, creel surveys, weir and/or screw trap studies, telemetry surveys, scuba/snorkel surveys, water quality studies, genetic studies and age and growth research. The Biologist II-Senior is responsible for the maintenance of all project equipment, order all supplies and ensure all deadlines are met.  The Biologist II-Senior is responsible for coordinating activities with outside agencies and representing the Tribe at relevant regional meetings and conferences.

QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training: 

Biologist II:  A Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in fisheries, natural resources science, or environmental science AND 36 months’ experience at the Biologist I or equivalent level related to fish management, conservation, and/or research; OR A Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the applicable science AND 12 months’ experience at the Biologist I or equivalent level related to fish management, conservation, and/or research.  Must submit college transcript.
Senior Biologist: A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in the applicable science AND 36 months of required experience; OR A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in fisheries, natural resources science, or environmental science AND 60 months’ experience at the Biologist I or II or equivalent level related to fish management, fish research, habitat management, or habitat research.  Must submit college transcript.
Requires a valid State Driver's License and be eligible for coverage under the Tribes vehicle insurance program. 
Requires able to obtain a Class A CDL within 180 days of employment. 
Requires ability to pass the Boat Washington Course and obtain a Washington Boater Education Card within 30 days of employment.
Must be eligible to receive a valid US passport and be eligible to travel in Canada.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Requires knowledge of the principles and procedures of biological research, fish management, habitat assessments, fish species identification and statistical applications for fisheries management.
Requires knowledge of life history characteristics and habitat requirements of kokanee salmon and other fish species.
Requires knowledge of environmental regulation principles and procedures as they apply to fish management, habitat research and fish culture.
Requires knowledge of standard laboratory and field methods and statistical data processing relating to fisheries work, including fish species, their habits and life histories.
Requires knowledge of factors influencing the capacity of water bodies to sustain fish populations, hatchery operations and treatments for common fish diseases and parasites, fish collection and spawning procedures and fishing regulations.
Requires the ability to define research problems and determine extent and type of information needed. 
Requires the ability to initiate, plan and design independent experimental research and implement results of research findings.
Requires the ability to recruit, develop and retain highly qualified professional and technical staff. Supervise professional and technical staff.
Requires the ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing. 
Requires the ability to communicate effectively with people in diverse job classes and particularly with peers in regulatory agencies. 
Requires the ability to express oneself in a clear, concise, and scientifically accurate manner when providing oral or written reports to diverse audiences.
Requires the ability to operate and maintain work boats, including electrofishing boats, drift boats, and landing craft style boats up to 28 ft in length. 
Requires the ability to organize and prioritize work to achieve results, goals, and objectives on time.
 Requires the ability to effectively handle adverse situations, making appropriate decisions, working calmly, and accurately. 
Requires the ability to safely operate trucks and trailers; backing up, loading, and unloading equipment off the trailers.
Requires the ability to function indoors in an office environment and outdoors. 
Requires the ability to work in an office setting, attend meetings, perform site visits and conduct fieldwork.
Requires sufficient hand-eye-arm coordination to use a keyboard and 10-key plus arm/hand movements to retrieve work materials and operate a variety of general office equipment. 
Requires good physical condition to be able to work and hike in inclement weather conditions of over variable and lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds while hiking in steep terrain.
 Requires the ability to drive light duty trucks, tow and disconnect trailers. 
Requires the ability to launch and operate a boat. 
Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers.
Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations over the phone and in person.
Requires the ability to sit for considerable periods of time and complete repetitive tasks.
Requires the ability to work a variable schedule, including evenings, early mornings, holidays, and weekends as the work dictates.
Requires the ability to travel for work projects, meetings, training and conference participation as necessary. 
Requires ability to drive in adverse weather conditions.
Requires the ability to work in inclement weather conditions, on boats, in and around cold, moving water, and over variable, slippery, and rugged terrain with supplies and equipment. 
Requires the ability to swim and work safely on boats, barges, catwalks and gangways and around cold, deep, swift moving water.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.
