Salary Range: $35.72 per hour (approximately $65,000 annually)

Location: Long Island City, Queens

Days/Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (35 hours per week)

Fortune has a dual mission: both advocacy and service. The advocacy portion of our mission focuses on building a more just criminal legal system and reducing the barriers to reentry into society. The service side of Fortune has evolved to encompass a broad range of programs that started with employment and education and now includes a robust array of services, among them: alternatives to incarceration, supervised release, court advocacy, discharge planning within correctional facilities, licensed substance use and mental health treatment, a housing continuum ranging from emergency and transitional through permanent congregate and scattered site housing, assistance in obtaining benefits, a care management unit, HIV services, a food and nutrition program, and an arts program. Each service we provide is informed by the needs of the population we serve. Fortune currently serves approximately 18,000 people a year. Our program models are recognized, both nationally and internationally, for their quality and innovation. We have locations in Brooklyn, The Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens.

Position Summary:

The Billing Specialist handles insurance claim submissions, tracks client insurance coverages, prior authorizations, and investigates denied claims to ensure reimbursements are paid accurately. The Billing Specialist will perform data entry, data integrity checks, data reporting, compliance oversight, physical and digital paperwork processing, and project management across all Behavioral Health functions and programs where billing is concerned.

Project Management:

Manage projects successfully throughout project lifecycle from inception to delivery with a results-driven mindset. Ensure data integrity through consistent monitoring, validation, and quality control. Identify errors or inconsistencies, implement corrective actions, and train staff as needed to maintain compliance with regulatory, contractual, and billing requirements. Demonstrate strong attention to detail and accountability in all data-related work and project timelines.

Time Management & Personal Organization:

Demonstrate excellent time management skills, particularly regarding strict weekly, monthly, and seasonal billing deadlines. They will be adept at maintaining personal organization in pursuing numerous tasks in parallel, managing their time to maximize efficiency, and will be good at completing tasks accurately and in a timely manner. This person will support operational planning, forecasting, and contract compliance.

Collaboration:

Partner effectively with program leadership, Compliance, Finance, IT, and clinical staff to support data entry and reporting. Communicate complex data clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, translating findings into actionable recommendations while working in a culturally responsive and team-oriented manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform weekly reviews and submissions of service billing, invoicing, vouchering, and other reimbursements across all Behavioral Health (BH) programs and service locations;
Work with clinicians or other service providers to resolve data integrity errors related to all BH billing functions within specific deadlines;
Stay informed on the latest billing guidelines, charge rates, and procedures announced by city, state, and federal agencies, including Medicaid, Medicare, OMH, and OASAS;
Manage routine reviews of denied claims once they are adjudicated and support the appeal processes;
Provide periodic information and data requested by other departments in a timely manner;
Assist the Data Analytics Manager with routine auditing of BH billing practices;
Serve as the backup person for facility, provider, and insurance payer credentialing paperwork preparation;
Perform other duties as assigned.

QualificationsQualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Finance, or a related field;
2+ years of experience in medical billing or revenue cycle management preferred;
Some familiarity with insurance billing and coding;
Impeccable attention to detail and strong time management skills;
Proficiency with EHR systems and Microsoft 365, particularly Excel;
Exceptional communication and organizational skills;
Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced, evolving, cross-functional environment.
