Position Summary

The Public Safety Officer is a hands-on security and safety position responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for employees, visitors, residents, guests, property, and company assets.

The Public Safety Officer performs duties including access control and completing detailed security reports.

This position requires a professional and highly visible presence, strong situational awareness, excellent communication skills, and the ability to respond appropriately to routine security concerns, safety issues, and emergency situations.

Primary Public Safety Responsibilities

• Maintain a professional, highly visible, and approachable public safety presence throughout the assigned property.
• Monitor entrances and exits
• Identify and report suspicious persons, vehicles, activity, safety hazards, property damage, unsecured doors, and other security or safety concerns.
• Monitor access to the property and ensure only authorized individuals enter controlled or restricted areas.
• Verify identification, credentials, visitor authorization, or access permissions when required.
• Maintain visitor, contractor, vendor, delivery, and other required access logs.
• Assist employees, visitors, residents, guests, and members of the public in a professional and courteous manner.
• Provide directions and general assistance while maintaining appropriate safety and security awareness.
• Enforce property rules, policies, post orders, and safety procedures professionally and respectfully.
• Use communication and de-escalation techniques whenever appropriate to resolve situations safely.
• Immediately notify management, law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, or other emergency services when circumstances require escalation.
• Preserve incident scenes and protect evidence when appropriate until management or emergency responders arrive.
• Never exceed assigned authority or engage in unnecessary physical confrontation.
• Complete detailed Daily Activity Reports.
• Complete incident reports whenever required.
• Documenting safety hazards, maintenance concerns, property damage, and suspicious activity.
• Completing reports before the end of the assigned shift whenever possible.
• Immediately communicating serious incidents or urgent concerns to management.

Professional Conduct

Public Safety Officers are expected to maintain a high level of professionalism at all times.

Officers must:

• Arrive on time, properly uniformed, and ready for duty.
• Maintain a clean and professional appearance.
• Remain alert and attentive throughout the entire shift.
• Remain at the assigned post or patrol area unless properly relieved or directed otherwise.
• Treat all individuals professionally, respectfully, and impartially.
• Avoid unnecessary personal cell phone use and other distractions while on duty.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding security operations, incidents, client information, access procedures, and other sensitive information.
• Follow all company policies, site-specific post orders, safety procedures, and lawful management instructions.
• Never sleep while on duty.
• Never abandon an assigned post.
• Never leave the property without proper authorization or relief.

Qualifications

Required:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Previous security, public safety, military, law enforcement, customer service, or related experience preferred.
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
• Ability to write clear, accurate, and detailed reports.
• Strong observation and situational-awareness skills.
• Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during emergencies.
• Ability to interact professionally with employees, visitors, residents, guests, and members of the public.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality.
• Ability to understand and follow written post orders and verbal instructions.

Preferred Certifications:

• First Aid/CPR/AED
• Narcan/Opioid Overdose Response
• Crowd Management
• De-escalation or Crisis Response Training
• Other applicable state or site-specific security/public safety certifications

Physical & Working Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to conduct interior and exterior patrols in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to climb stairs and access designated patrol locations.
• Ability to respond promptly to incidents when required.
• Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and varying schedules based on operational needs.
• Ability to operate radios, mobile reporting applications, access-control systems, CCTV systems, and other security technology.
