Base Camp Counselor

SUMMARY

The Basecamp Attendant is a seasonal, hands-on position responsible for creating safe, engaging, and memorable experiences for children and families at Tamarack Resort. Basecamp Counselors work with children ranging from infants through 12 years old and may support programming throughout the Basecamp Youth Activity Center, camps, Kid Zone, special events, and other family activities. This position spends significant time both indoors and outdoors and requires an energetic, creative, and adaptable individual who enjoys working with children and can keep them engaged through active play, exploration, recreation, and age-appropriate learning experiences. Counselors are expected to actively participate in activities, model positive behavior, maintain a safe and welcoming environment, and help create the fun, adventurous atmosphere that defines the Basecamp experience.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

YOUTH SUPERVISION & SAFETY

· Actively supervise children ages infant through 12 years old while maintaining a safe, inclusive, and positive environment.

· Follow all Basecamp policies, safety procedures, supervision requirements, and child-to-staff ratios.

· Maintain awareness of children's individual needs, abilities, behaviors, and comfort levels.

· Provide attentive care and support during transitions, meals, rest periods, bathroom routines, and other daily activities.

· Respond appropriately to injuries, emergencies, behavioral concerns, and other situations requiring staff intervention.

· Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers.

ACTIVITIES & ENGAGEMENT

· Lead and participate in a wide range of age-appropriate activities including outdoor exploration, nature activities, games, sports, arts and crafts, STEM, climbing, imaginative play, and recreational activities.

· Create engaging experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity, movement, teamwork, and exploration.

· Use creativity and available resources to keep children actively engaged throughout the day.

· Participate enthusiastically in activities rather than simply supervising from the sidelines.

· Adapt activities to accommodate different ages, developmental levels, abilities, interests, weather conditions, and group dynamics.

· Encourage children to explore the natural environment while promoting responsible outdoor practices and environmental awareness.

· Support outdoor education and adventure-based programming, including hiking, camping, water-based activities, and other recreational experiences as assigned.

BASECAMP PROGRAMS & OPERATIONS

· Work across Basecamp Youth Activity Center, camps, Kid Zone, special events, and other family programming as scheduled.

· Assist with setting up, organizing, and cleaning activity areas, equipment, and supplies.

· Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment for children and families.

· Properly use, store, and care for activity equipment and program materials.

· Assist with opening and closing procedures as assigned.

· Follow daily direction from the Basecamp Supervisor and communicate effectively regarding children's needs, activities, supplies, safety concerns, and operational needs.

· Provide friendly and professional customer service to children, parents, guardians, and resort guests.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

· Must be at least 16 years old.

· Previous childcare, camp, recreation, education, or youth-programming experience preferred.

· Passionate about working with children, nature, outdoor recreation, and adventure.

· Creative, energetic, patient, dependable, and able to keep children engaged in a variety of activities.

· Comfortable working with children ages infant–12 years and adapting activities to different ages, abilities, and interests.

· Physically capable of actively participating in outdoor activities and working in varying weather conditions.

· Strong communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and behavior guidance skills.

· Experience with hiking, camping, water-based activities, or outdoor education preferred.

· Pediatric CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.

· Ability to complete required IdahoSTARS training and Department of Health and Welfare background check.

· Must be available for weekends, evenings, holidays, and varying seasonal shifts.

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or GED preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

· Fluent in English.

· Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with children, families, guests, and team members.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

· Ability to perform basic arithmetic and accurately count and supervise children.

REASONING ABILITY

· Ability to identify safety concerns, assess situations, and determine appropriate responses.

· Ability to solve problems quickly and calmly in a dynamic environment.

· Ability to make appropriate decisions while following established policies and procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Frequent bending, climbing, kneeling squatting, twisting/turning from waist and pushing/pulling objects.

· Will be working with hands and fingers, lifting and moving objects up to 40 pounds horizontally and vertically on a regular basis.

· Near and far vision as well as good depth perception and color vision are important. Frequent use of senses.

· Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.

· able to work in fluctuating temperatures.
