Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position): 

The St. Olaf Philharmonia Assistant Student Manager supports the logistical and operational needs of St. Olaf Philharmonia during rehearsals, concerts, and ensemble activities. Working under the direction of the Philharmonia Student Manager and the Associate Director of Music Organizations, this role assists with stage setup, equipment preparation, and coordination of student crews to ensure rehearsals and performances run efficiently. The Assistant Student Manager helps prepare chairs, music stands, and instruments, assists with instrument and equipment movement, and helps maintain the organization of orchestral equipment and rehearsal spaces. This position also assists in anticipating and troubleshooting logistical needs related to stage configurations and performance setup for Philharmonia rehearsals and performances.

 Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Set chairs, stands, and instruments for weekly rehearsals

• Assist Philharmonia Student Manager with coordinating student crews for on-campus dress rehearsals and performances

• Assist Philharmonia Student Manager with coordinating student crews for off-campus dress rehearsals and performances

• Drive the college-owned truck for on-campus performances 

 Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills) 

• Strong leadership skills, including positivity, flexibility, and problem solving, respect for student colleagues, faculty, and staff

• Knowledge of orchestral stage configurations 

• Knowledge of orchestral equipment and instruments

• Knowledge of scheduling practices for truck transfers, stage set-ups and tear-downs, rehearsals, and performances

• Knowledge of student crew organization

• Active St. Olaf College Approved Driver

• Must commit to one year position regardless of ensemble placement

• Preference given to students who are interested in serving in ensemble leadership for 2-3 years.

Physical and Environmental Factors:

This position requires crouching, stooping, climbing/balancing, reaching overhead, grasping/handling, pushing/pulling, lifting and carrying objects up to 20 lbs., and driving to perform the essential functions. It also requires exposure to loud noise, extreme cold, and heights or cramped quarters to perform the essential functions, as well as rare exposure to respiratory factors, chemicals, vibrations, wet or humid conditions indoors, extreme heat, and proximity hazards. Protective equipment is required for some essential functions. Candidates must possess the ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
