BUILD is a nationally respected gang intervention, violence prevention, and youth development organization based on Chicago’s West Side. Since 1969, BUILD has worked to save lives and mentor young people who live in the city’s most challenged neighborhoods. When you work at BUILD you make an important difference to the thousands of youths and families we serve.

Our Core Values: Empathy, Passion, Persistence, and Innovation.

  • Gardening Education: Assist Austin Grown staff with the facilitation of hands-on   gardening activities and workshops for youth and community members. Teach   fundamental gardening techniques, sustainable practices, and principles of   food justice.
  • Community Engagement: Build positive relationships with community members and local   organizations. Encourage participation and foster a sense of ownership and   pride in community gardening projects.
  • Resource Management: Assist in managing gardening supplies, tools, and materials.   Maintain accurate records of garden activities, inventory, and participant   progress.
  • Outreach and Advocacy: Recruit youth to participate in Austin Grown’s after school and   summer youth program in partnership with the Austin Grown Coordinator.   Promote the benefits of gardening and sustainability through community   outreach and educational materials. Advocate for food justice and   environmental awareness within the community.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other staff members, volunteers, and local   partners to coordinate gardening activities and integrate gardening programs   into broader community initiatives.

Requirements

About the company

Build Inc

Since 1969, BUILD, Inc. has worked in some of Chicago's toughest neighborhoods giving at-risk youth alternatives to the violence that takes away their positive potential. Applying our model of positive youth development, BUILD seeks to redirect the behavior of gang-affiliated youth and potential gang recruits in order to improve their chances of leading fulfilling lives and to increase the stability and safety of the communities in which they reside.

We have helped more than 80,000 young people lead more productive, happier lives results that have been documented by numerous outside studies. In fact, many former program participants who have gone on to successful careers as attorneys, educators, policemen, firemen, and government employees identify BUILD programming as a key source of their success.

BUILD has been highly effective in offering alternatives to gangs because our programs address the causes of the problem, not just gang activity itself. We have furthered our success by emphasizing leadership development and helping youth develop positive life plans.

Our top priority is to help at-risk youth realize the full extent of their educational and career potential so that they can give back to the communities in which they live.
