McLeod Health is seeking a motivated Athletic Trainer Extern to provide sports medicine assistance to the Athletic Training staff by helping patients within the McLeod Athletic Training Departments at area schools. This PRN opportunity offers hands-on experience working alongside certified athletic trainers and healthcare professionals while assisting with injury prevention, rehabilitation, patient care, and athletic training operations.

The Athletic Trainer Extern is not an independent healthcare provider and will perform clinical activities only within the scope permitted by the supervising organization and applicable laws and institutional policies. The Athletic Extern will work under the direct supervision of a certified athletic trainer or other qualified healthcare professional. This role is designed to provide valuable clinical experience while supporting the delivery of high-quality sports medicine services.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist the staff athletic trainer with day to day operations of the athletic training facility including areas such as daily patient care, field preparations, and preventative activities.

• Support medical documentation and daily operations of the athletic training facility.

• Assist with designing rehabilitation plans for injured patients.

• Assist the Certified Athletic Trainer with developing and implementing new policies and procedures as needed.

• Maintain a professional appearance and conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.

• Participate in injury prevention and wellness initiatives.
• Maintain a professional appearance and demonstrate professional conduct at all times.
• Provide support during practices, athletic competitions, and special events as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 

PRN (As Needed)

• Athletic competitions

Qualifications:

Education

• Master’s Degree from an accredited Athletic Training program

• Eligible to sit for the BOC exam

Experience

• Previous athletic training clinical experience preferred.

License/Certification Requirement: 

• BLS (American Heart Association).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong interest in athletic training, sports medicine, injury prevention, and rehabilitation.
• Basic understanding of anatomy, injury assessment, emergency care, and therapeutic exercise.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
• Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a healthcare team.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, practices, and athletic competitions.
