Reports to: Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director

Summit School is an independent school located in Winston-Salem, NC is seeking an Athletic Frist Responder for 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grade students to provide athletic first responder coverage for school athletic programs. 

Major duties and Responsibilities:

These duties are based on the needs of the school and its athletic programs. The athletic first responder duties, enumerated in this document, should not be considered all inclusive. The Athletic Director, as necessary, shall modify duties. The athletic first responder will be present at home athletic contests and practices and shall attend other post-season and home-hosted contests as directed by the Athletic Director. 

Establish an effective athletic response program for the school athletic program.
Provide First aid and injury assessment/treatment/rehabilitation for Summit School student-athletes. The athletic first responder will also be responsible for making appropriate physician referral and follow up. 
Provide coverage at home events and practices from the beginning of the fall sport season to the conclusion of the spring season. 
Coordinate the annual required athletic physicals and supervise the clearance of injured athletes prior to and during the sport seasons. 
Maintain a line of communication with the team physician(s) regarding athletic health care and recommended treatment/rehabilitation for all athletic injuries. 
Assist coaching staff in evaluating and implementing sport specific conditioning programs and methods. 
Maintain an effective and efficient athletic training room. 
Maintain communication with parents and coaches on the care & treatment of their student-athlete. 
File all necessary reports associated with athletic injuries and/or incidents in Magnus.
Maintain a daily treatment log. 
Oversee the ordering of supplies and equipment pertaining to the athletic training room and maintain an up to date inventory. Provide the Athletic Director with an annual budget for supplies and equipment. 
Equip each team with appropriate medical kit and equipment. 
Assist in the selection and fitting of protective equipment, including special taping, pads or braces. 
Create a safe playing environment by monitoring and controlling environmental risks
Share professional literature relative to athletic training with the school’s coaching staff. 

Terms of Employment:

Part-time Ten month position, beginning the first day of fall football practice, approximately the first Monday of August, through mid-May. The athletic first responder will work in accordance with a weekly schedule to be determined by the Athletic Director approximately 2:45-6:45.  Weekly schedules will vary according to the athletic season and games schedules with approximately 20-25 hours per week. 

Evaluation:

Will be evaluated annually by the Athletic Director in accordance with North Carolina laws and regulations.

 Qualifications: Position Requirements:

Maintain current certification and continuing education requirements as set forth by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification or Emergency Medical Technician.  Maintain current state licensure in accordance with the North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners or EMT. Maintain current certification in CPR/AED. 

Physical Requirements: Candidates must fulfill the following core physical demands to perform active field duties and emergency interventions safely:

Heavy Lifting & Transport: Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull 50 to 100+ lbs, including emergency gear, training equipment, and incapacitated individuals.
Agility & Sprinting: Capability to accelerate quickly into a sprint across varying outdoor terrain (turf, mud, wet rubber tracks) and navigate stairs while carrying gear.
Positional Mobility: Frequent kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and maintaining low-position postures on ground surfaces for extended periods.
Stamina & Environmental Resilience: Endurance to stand, walk, and remain physically active throughout 2-to-4+ hour shifts in extreme weather conditions (heat, freezing temperatures).
Fine Motor Dexterity: Manual precision to perform rapid, high-stress medical or technical tasks (CPR, splinting, taping, equipment adjustments) under pressure.
Sensory Acuity: High visual acuity to assess movement or distress from a distance, paired with clear auditory perception over loud crowd noise.
