Associate Underwriter (Remote)

Job Summary:
The Associate Underwriter supports the Regional Underwriting Directors and the EVP of Alternative Markets throughout the underwriting lifecycle. The role reviews and analyzes submission data, evaluates risk acceptability, prepares rating and loss-analysis information, issues policy documents, maintains accurate files, and communicates effectively with producers and internal partners.

Key Responsibilities:

• Review underwriting submissions for completeness and accuracy, summarize relevant exposure and risk information, and organize supporting documentation in the approved file format.
• Analyze underwriting data, including exposure information, financial data, loss history, and other relevant risk indicators, to support risk selection and pricing decisions.
• Conduct and document internet and public-record research to identify risk characteristics, adverse information, or other issues that may affect risk acceptability.
• Review budget information to determine each risk’s net operating expenditures and document the resulting rating basis for underwriting review.
• Calculate rating bases accurately from verified exposure and financial data in accordance with approved underwriting guidelines.
• Enter verified exposure and rating data into the approved rating system, validate the resulting unmodified premiums, and escalate discrepancies for review.
• Rate complex accounts accurately by applying approved rating methodologies, underwriting guidelines, and exposure data.
• Complete and document loss analyses, identify relevant loss trends and severity drivers, and summarize findings for underwriting review.
• Prepare and distribute accurate binders to producers in accordance with approved terms, conditions, pricing, and service standards.
• Issue accurate policies and endorsements, verify that documents reflect approved underwriting terms, and distribute completed documents to producers within required service timelines.
• Prepare and issue accurate renewal letters in accordance with ODEN standards and required service timelines.
• Review and validate formula changes to rating models before implementation, document testing results, and promptly escalate discrepancies or control concerns.
• Maintain complete, accurate, and current files for pending, closed, canceled, and bound policies in accordance with departmental procedures and record-retention requirements.
• Maintain proficiency in the underwriting, rating, policy administration, and workflow systems and processes used by the department.
• Support special projects by gathering and validating information, coordinating assigned activities, and completing deliverables within established timelines.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with producers by communicating clearly, responding promptly, and providing accurate information throughout the underwriting process.
• Participate actively in team meetings and trainings by preparing relevant information, contributing to discussions, and completing assigned follow-up actions.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams, and the ability to learn underwriting, rating, and policy administration systems
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills, including the ability to calculate rating bases, analyze financial and loss data, and identify discrepancies.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain underwriting information clearly to producers, underwriters, and internal partners. 
• Ability to prioritize multiple assignments, manage competing deadlines, and maintain accuracy in a deadline-driven environment.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with underwriting, operations, production, and other internal partners in a remote team environment. 

Education/Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, risk management, insurance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is required.
• Five years of relevant insurance experience, preferably supporting public-entity underwriting, rating, policy issuance, or related operations is required. 

Working Conditions:
This position may require extended work hours during periods of increased business activity. The Associate Underwriter must be available to support peak business periods, particularly April 1 through July 15 and October 1 through December 15, when workload and time-sensitive underwriting activities may increase.

Regular availability is required during established core business hours of 8:30 am to 5:00 pm in applicant’s time zone, with additional flexibility as business needs require.

Physical Requirements:
This position does not have physical requirements beyond those typically associated with a professional office environment. Duties may involve prolonged periods of sitting, working at a computer, participating in virtual or in-person meetings, and performing other routine office activities.

Occasional business travel may be required, including the customary physical and environmental demands associated with corporate travel.

Pay Range:
$75,000 - $95,000 depending on experience and location.
