The Associate Program Director (APD) assists the Program Director (PD) in the performance of educational, evaluative, academic and administrative duties essential to the running of the Internal Medicine Residency Program (the Program). S/he also functions as the Residency Director of Ambulatory Care. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's/area's/department's policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• 1. EDUCATIONAL A. Assists the PD to develop and execute a successful Residency Program Curriculum (the APD may chair the Program's Curriculum Committee) and/or Clinical Competency Committee (CCC). B. Assist other faculty (such as Section Chiefs) with development of rotation specific goals and objectives for the Program Curriculum. C. Is primarily responsible, with the assistance of the PD for the educational and administrative tasks related to the Outpatient Center. D. Collaboratively implements structural and educational changes to the program to address identified areas for improvement in the Program Curriculum. E. Aids residents in developing ideas and facilitate connections with mentors for required scholarly project(s) (includes quality improvement, case reports, abstracts, presentations and peer reviewed publications). F. Tracks resident scholarship and serves as a mentor to them regarding their future scholarly goals/fellowship applications. G. Actively Participates with residents in scholarly activities; national and local conferences, poster presentations and performance improvement projects. H. Responsible to plan, schedule and oversee Ambulatory Morning Conferences. I. Actively participate in weekly Board Review Course. Act as board review mentor to an equal proportion of residents as the other faculty members. J. Supervise, teach and precept Residents and Students in the Outpatient Center thereby providing exceptional care to the patients seen in the Outpatient Center. K. May be assigned to assume the responsibilities of being the Clerkship Site Director for Yale and or New York Medical Student and or PA Student rotations at Greenwich Hospital, including the coordination of students' activities, complying with the curricula prepared by the school(s) and completing all required student evaluations including applicable letters of recommendation.
• 1.1 Assist the PD and Chair of the Curriculum Committee develop and execute a successful IM Residency Program Curriculum (Currently one of the APD's chairs the Program's Curriculum Committee).
• 2. EVALUATION: Actively participate on the Clinical Competency Committee that oversees the development and maintains a system of milestone and competency-based evaluations. May chair the Committee. a. Residents are evaluated quarterly and the committee provides the PD with a formal competency based evaluation of each resident. b. The committee also monitors completion of evaluations by residents and the completion of evaluations by faculty. c. The committee develops level and competency based coaching/mentoring plans for residents deemed in need of such d. Personally complete all student and resident evaluations and provide feedback to learners for all clinical and non-clinical rotations for which s/he is responsible. e. Assist the PD in the completion of ACGME mid and end of year resident summative assessments.
• 2.1 Member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and Program Evaluation Committee (PEC).
• 3. RECRUITMENT: Actively participates in the Resident Selection Committee that oversees the recruitment of residents and the Chief Resident/Junior Faculty Member. May function as the chair of the Committee. Actively participates in interviewing candidates (at least in equal proportion to other faculty members) as assigned by the PD. Reviews all applications including Dean's Letters and letters of recommendation.
• 3.1 Assist the PD, APD's, CR and PA in the Identification and recruitment of a chief resident each year.
• 4. MENTORING: a. Responsible for mentoring residents in planning, performing and presenting clinical research b. Responsible for mentoring a number of residents equivalent to other full time faculty members for their preparation to take the ABIM Certifying Examination c. Responsible for mentoring residents for career planning and/or fellowship applications d. May be the Chair of the Residency Mentoring Committee and or the Residency Wellness Committe and or the Residency DEI Commitee
• 4.1 Assist PD, APD's, CR and PA in facilitating a mentoring system and a wellness program for residents.
• 5. ADMINISTRATION OF THE INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM: A. Participate in all Program Committees (may chair any of these except GMEC) 1. The Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) that oversees all aspects of the Program and other institutional educational affiliations. 2. The Program Evaluation Committee that oversees a formal annual evaluation of the Residency Program. 3. The Curriculum Committee that oversees the formal annual review of the Program Curriculum and the Policies and Procedures Manual. 4. The Clinical Competency Committee that oversees the development and maintains a system of milestone and competency-based evaluations. a. Residents are evaluated quarterly and the committee provides the PD with a formal competency based evaluation of each resident. b. The committee also monitors completion of evaluations by residents and the completion of evaluations by faculty. c. The committee develops level and competency based coaching/mentoring plans for residents deemed in need of such. d. The Full Time Faculty Committee e. The Program Evaluation Committee B. Assist the PD develop and oversee the allocation of residents in their various rotations in order to satisfy ACGME Review Committee for Internal Medicine requirements for successful completion of an Internal Medicine residency with particular attention to the overlap between outpatient and inpatient assignments. C. Assist the PD to continuously re-evaluate anticipated educational needs of residents as ACGME requirements change and as the evolution of Internal Medicine practice patterns and career paths continues. D. With PD, Program Administrator and Chief Resident monitor and ensure residents are not violating duty hour rules. E. Ensure residents are meeting programmatic, ABIM andACGME requirements to be eligible to sit for the board examination upon residency completion. F. Attend Association of Program Directors? Annual Meetings at the PD's discretion to ensure that the residency program is up to date with new requirements. G Attend local Yale Affiliated Hospitals Program in Internal Medicine meetings that occur quarterly. H. Meet at least weekly with the PD, CR and PA to discuss Program issues. These include resident performance, safety issues, duty hours, stress and conflicts, problem solving and resident and attending perforance reviews.
• 5.1 Assist PD, APD's, CR and PA develop and oversee the allocation of residents in their various rotations in order to satisfy ACGME and Residency Review Committee requirements for successful completion of an internal medicine residency with particular attention to the overlap between outpatient and inpatient assignments.
• 6. REGULATORY COMPLIANCE A. Assist the PD and PA prepare for and participate in ACGME RC and CLER visits. B. Attend Association of Program Directors? Annual Meetings at the PD's discretion to ensure that the residency program is up to date with new requirements and trends in medical education. C. If assigned to be the Student Site Director, may be asked by the PD to join the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine and attend their annual meeting that coincids with the annual meeting of the Associtionl of Program Directors. D. Attend local Yale Affiliated Hospitals Program in Internal Medicine meetings that occur quarterly. E. Meet at least weekly with the PD, CR and PA to discuss Program issues. These include resident performance, safety issues, duty hours, stress and conflicts, problem solving and resident and attending performance reviews. F. Prepare for and participate in both internal and external reviews of the program by the accrediting bodies and respond to any concerns or deficiencies that may arise as a result of these reviews, problem-solve, help identify resident candidates for annual awards, etc. G. Act for the Program Director in his/her absence
• 6.1 With PD, APD's and CR monitor and ensure residents are not violating duty hour rules and are complying with the Curriculum, Policies and Procedures of the Program.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Graduation from an accredited medical school. ABIM certification in Internal Medicine.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of two (3) years' experience as a faculty member of an ACGME accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program. One year as Chief Resident may count towards this requirement. Other combinations of applicable experience and education may be acceptable if approved by the Program Director.

LICENSURE

Licensed as a Physician in Connecticut. Active DEA certificate

SPECIAL SKILLS

General internal medicine diagnosis, treatment and consultation. Teaching and mentoring skills for students and residents. Administrative skills for overseeing and coordinating House staff and medical student schedules as well as coordinating lectures and student activities. Collaborative skills for managing academic and administrative aspects of the position. Recruiting skills. Skills in curriculum development, clinical research, process improvement, information technology and/or statistics.
